America’s Official Western History Museum Is Right Here In Oklahoma

The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City is America’s premier museum of Western history. They opened in 1955 and have collected and preserved an impressive amount of internationally renowned art and artifacts to endure the legacy of the American West. They have an extensive art gallery with permanent pieces of art, as well as a rotating gallery.

There are 12 galleries to visit in the museum, including the Lynn Hickey American Rodeo Gallery. Here, you can explore the sport’s evolution from round-up competitions to high-stakes professional competition in the colorful and dramatic interpretive gallery housing over 6,500 square feet.

Another fun one is Prosperity Junction where you can step back in time for an evening stroll in a replica turn-of-the-twentieth-century cattle town.

In the museum, you'll also find an authentic wagon that gives a glimpse back in time at how people got around town and the country.

Art enthusiasts will love the unique art pieces and history that is represented through the eyes of the artist. Some pieces are even available for purchase.

The museum hosts several special events throughout the year, many of which have several live actors. One fan favorite is the annual Chuck Wagon Festival held in the month of May.

It's a two-day family fun festival that showcases chuck wagon food samples, butter making with Ag in the Classroom, artisan demonstrations, bandanna decorating, live music, rope making with Ward Family Trick Ropers, Western reenactors, face painting, children’s craft stations, and much more.
