Sometimes the best things in Oklahoma are FREE! Summer is here and maybe you're looking for things to keep the kids busy or you and your partner want to enjoy an activity that won't cost you much. Free doesn't mean boring or any less fun...in fact we found some fabulous things to do that won't deplete your bank account.
1. Talimena Scenic Drive
Take a drive along this 54 mile route that will display some of the most beautiful scenery in the state. Stop and see some of the historic towns along the way, pack a picnic or take a hike in the Ouachita National Forest.
2. Libraries
Visit one of several libraries across the state for story time or check your local library for special activities. Check-out some new books or even a new-release movie for free.
3. Farmer's Market
Many cities in Oklahoma have a local farmer's market. These are fun to visit; you can find things made locally and get introduced to new businesses in your area. You can even pick-up a few free samples from some of the vendors.
4. Parks
Parks are a fabulous way to enjoy activities that are free. Children can entertain themselves for hours at the park. If it is a hot day, choose a park with a splash pad to stay cool.
5. Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art
Located on the campus of University of Oklahoma, this art museum is one the finest of its kind. It is always FREE and is open 6 days a week (closed on Mondays.)
6. Bowling
Take advantage of the "Kids Bowl Free" program found at www.kidsbowlfree.com. You can find over 15 bowling centers in Oklahoma that participate in this FREE activity. Kids receive 2 FREE bowling games per day, summers only.
7. Express Clydesdales Barn
View these stunning Clysdesdales in Yukon, OK. The barn and gift shop are open to the public Tuesday-Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m and Sundays from 12:30-5:00 p.m.
8. Tulsa Rose Garden
Located in Woodward Park, beautiful roses have been blooming here since 1935. Pack a picnic and enjoy the peaceful outdoors at this garden and park.
9. Matt Hoffman Action Sports Park
This skatepark is open from dawn to 11:00 p.m. all year-round and is always FREE. Grab your skateboard, skates or BMX bike and spend hours at this top-rated skate park....don't forget your helmet. Location: 1700 S. Robinson, OKC, OK.
10. Gloss Mountain State Park
Spend the day hiking in the red mesas that sparkle in the sunlight from the selenite crystals. This FREE park is open from dawn to dusk and is located in northwestern Oklahoma.
11. Fishing
You can always find a fishing hole or lake in Oklahoma to catch your next big one.
12. Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History
Visit this museum on the first Monday in July, August, and September and receive FREE admission for children 17 and under. The museum is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. Location: University of Oklahoma campus.
13. Warren Theatre Broken Arrow
Yes, you can go to the movies for FREE. This summer 2015 program in Broken Arrow is offering FREE admission for adults and children to the kid friendly movie series. Kids under 13 will also receive a FREE Summer Kids Pack at the concession stand. Movies are shown at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays until August 6th. This and similar programs are hosted throughout the summer each year.
14. Concerts
Enjoy live music at a FREE outdoor concert during the summer months. Check your city's website or newspaper for dates and times.
