Most People Don’t Know There’s A Cemetery Hiding Below This Popular Landmark In Oklahoma
Ready for a little Throwback Thursday? Did you know long before the BOK Center in Tulsa was a popular landmark filled with concerts, games and special events, it was a cemetery? Yep, it's true! From 1882 until 1905, Oklahomans buried approximately 300 bodies in the cemetery located on the land where the current BOK center sits. Here's a look back at what we know:
From 1882 until 1905, over 300 bodies were buried in the area that was known as Tulsa's first public cemetery. And before that, many people think it was an American Indian burial ground.
Many bodies were moved in 1905 to a new cemetery, but several graves were left unmarked. In early 2000, the land was picked as the site for the BOK Center - a 19,199-seat multi-purpose arena and a primary indoor sports and event venue.
Construction began in 2005 for this new venue and the dirt was being tossed in every direction. Construction workers were aware of the old cemetery, but they didn't expect to find human remains themselves.
While they were excavating for the large arena, they dug up several human bones. Can you even imagine?
They were all handed over to the state medical examiner and construction carried on as usual.
The BOK Center was completed in 2008 but the old cemetery below this venue will never be forgotten.
Do you think there are more spirits resting below this popular landmark? Who knows, maybe they enjoy all the new activity in their final resting place. What do you think?
Do you know of anyone that was buried in this spot? A few names that officials can confirm that were originally buried here are Jeff Archer (a popular merchant), outlaw John Yockey and U.S. deputy marshals – William Moody and Frank Sennett.
