These Epic Oklahoma Caverns May Be Your New Favorite Destination

Oklahoma is home to the largest natural gypsum cave in the world open to the public - Alabaster Caverns - and you need to visit this incredible place as soon as possible. The caves are part of the 200-acre Alabaster Caverns State Park in Freedom and guided tours are offered daily. Not only will you see a rare form of gypsum, but you'll also get to see several species of bats during your tour. Read on to learn more about these caverns that may be your new favorite destination.

Alabaster Caverns State Park, located in Freedom, is a world renowned cave system known for its rare form of gypsum. It's not only the largest in the world of its kind, but it's the only one in the United States.

The caves are tucked away in the hills and rugged terrain of northwestern Oklahoma. You'll access the caves down a walkway and stairs. Make sure to wear appropriate footwear, as the tour involves a strenuous walk.

Once inside, you'll quickly notice the cool temperatures. The cave hovers around 60 degrees during the hottest months, so it's the perfect summer activity to keep you cool.

Guided tours are offered every hour from 9am to 4pm for only $10/adult, $7/child and $8/seniors. A maximum of 40 visitors are allowed on each tour.

The tour takes about 45 minutes and takes you along a path about 3/4 mile long.

You'll descend over 300 feet below the surface of the earth.

And walk over 300 stairs.

But the experience will be so worth it. I mean, isn't that incredible?

The path is very well lit and there's safety rails for everyone's protection. But the path requires navigation as it is narrow and uneven. Every tour includes interpretation by the guides to educate you about the caves, bats and history.

Every day at dusk, the bats leave the caves in search for their food. If you wait around outside the caves, it's a fun sight to see.
