This Island Parish Near Cleveland Has The Oldest Wooden Church In Ohio

If you've never visited Put-in-Bay, you may be surprised to learn that this petite island is full of lesser-known attractions. It was first frequented by Lake Erie sailors looking to wait out storms, and it has since evolved into a charming community full of activities that tourists can't resist. While it is perhaps most famous for its involvement with Oliver Hazard Perry in the Battle of Lake Erie, visitors will find that this island is full of surprises... including a charming wooden church.

In 1864, with the assistance and expertise of Rev. John Miles Kendrick and philanthropist Jay Cooke, a newly formed congregation in Put-in-Bay began raising funds to build a church. Cooke provided the property to build it in May of 1865 (land said to be purchased "for the consideration of $10," according to the church's website, and the stunning wooden Carpenter Gothic church was finished in October of that same year.

This church is not only the oldest religious site on the island...

At the time of its construction, this church was the only religious site on the island. It served the whole community, though a Roman Catholic church was eventually established.

...It's also the oldest wooden church in continual use in the entire state.

This church was built in a mere six months, thanks to the efforts of hardworking parishioners. The workmanship is evident, as this 154-year-old church looks as flawless as the day it was completed.

The church is just two minutes from the lakeshore...

Today, the Put-in-Bay community hosts a population of about 140 residents. The village is just over half a square mile in size, making this church easily accessible no matter where you are on the island.

...Which, of course, means it's always graced with gorgeous sunrises and sunsets.

South Bass Island is downright breathtaking. Located in western Lake Erie, this slice of paradise is known to tourists as Ohio's version of Key West.
