Cleveland is home to a wide array of truly spectacular natural scenery. From the rocky coastline of Lake Erie to the rushing waters of Brandywine Falls, lovers of the great outdoors have no shortage of places to choose from. But nestled deep in the woods of southern Cleveland, there is a place unlike any other in northeast Ohio, and only experiencing its stunning beauty in person can do it justice.

Whipp's Ledges are a series of truly unusual sheer rock formations and bizarre cliffs within Hinckley Reservation; along the southern tip of the Emerald Necklace of Cleveland Metroparks. The unique stones here were carved out of huge boulders after millennia of natural erosion, making for some truly stunning shapes.

Some of the ledges rise to over 350 feet above the level of nearby Hinckley Lake, towering above the forest floor and proving some truly spectacular views.

The Whipp's Ledges Trail is a 1.3 mile hike through the reservation that leads visitors to the heart of the formations, allowing hikers to take in these geological wonders in all their glory.

The convoluted nature of the footpaths and rock formations at the Hinckley Ledges are best suited for experienced hikers. Several people have taken some nasty spills from the sheer ledges over the years.

Strange patterns and grooves in the stone are the result of heavy wind erosion over millions of years, giving some of the formations at Whipp's Ledges an almost alien look.

The elaborate ledges surround you on all sides the deeper you venture forth. It can definitely make for a tight fit, and the claustrophobic might want to be careful not to get too boxed in.

Even plants growing around Whipp's Ledges are influenced by the unusual formations, contorting into bizarre shapes defined by the rocks around them.

The outlandish rock formations at Whipp's Ledges are truly some of the most unique sights anywhere in Cleveland. Millions of years of geological history are laid bare in the middle of the Forest City, and they definitely must be seen in person to be truly appreciated.
