Most North Dakotans Have Never Heard Of This Fascinating Trail Museum
The Lewis and Clark Trail Museum in Alexander, North Dakota, offers a diverse and extensive collection of historical artifacts and is free to visit.
North Dakota has many fun and unique museums all across the state. You can find museums dedicated entirely to rocks, trains, or even bison. Though many people have heard of a lot of these museums, there are a few diamonds hiding in the rough that more people should know about. This museum in Alexander, for instance, is one many haven't ever heard of but definitely should check out:
Head on out to the small town of Alexander, North Dakota to visit their amazing Lewis and Clark Trail Museum. The town may only have around 220 people, but this museum is huge and awesome.
The museum is in an old three-story school that was originally built in 1914.
There is a school room in the museum that captures a glimpse into what this would have been like in the past.
Just because it is a school doesn't mean the museum stops at a school room. There are seven other buildings as part of the museum and so much to see within the school itself. This country store is mesmerizing with all the old, vintage items lining the shelves.
Whether you are interested in the history of the area or just like to look at neat old stuff, this museum can be fun for all. There are bits and pieces from North Dakota's history that spans across decades. That, of course, includes an entire room dedicated to the museum's namesake — explorers Lewis and Clark. Did you know that they spent more time in our state during their explorations than any other state?
Even prehistory is included with the huge petrified wood stumps formed over millions of years that decorate the grounds.
The many buildings house everything from an old jail cell to a variety of carriages, threshing machines, old tractors, and more. It just never seems to end!
The Lewis and Clark Trail Museum is so much more than just a trail museum. It's a little bit of everything and it's a place more people should know about. And the best part? It's entirely free to visit!
The Lewis and Clark Trail Museum is located at 102 Indiana Ave. E, Alexander, ND 58831. It is a seasonal museum and is closed on Wednesdays. For more information, click here.
