The Story Behind the Jackson Building, North Carolina’s Quirkiest Skyscraper

Complete with gargoyles and haunted lore, the Jackson Building is one of the strangest buildings in Asheville—which is saying something.

I lived in downtown Asheville for nearly two years, and during that short but adventure-packed time, I learned to appreciate the city's wonderfully unexpected architecture. When considering the most famous buildings in the city, most people envision the Biltmore, and for good reason. But that just scratches the surface of all that Asheville has to offer. For example, did you know that the city's tallest building is adorned with gargoyles? If you're a local, you probably know that I'm referring to the Jackson Building. But its intrigue goes beyond its ornate architecture. Let's dive into what makes this notorious skyscraper one of the strangest buildings in North Carolina.

The Story Behind the Jackson Building

The Jackson Building in Asheville was commissioned by real estate developer Lynwood B. (L.B.) Jackson. He hired architect Ronald Greene to design the 15-story Neo-Gothic skyscraper, which was completed in 1924 as the first skyscraper in western North Carolina. Jackson wanted the building to stand out in Asheville’s real estate market and even located his own office on the top floor when it opened.

Why This Building Stands Out from the Rest

Aside from its commanding height, the Jackson Building stands out from your typical North Carolina building. Its Neo-Gothic design was rare at the time and still is, a style typically reserved for cathedrals, libraries, and historic government buildings—not for a commercial office building. The original design included an observation deck for taking in views of the city and the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. It was also equipped with a massive searchlight that added to its dramatic flair. In fact, it could be seen from 30 miles away!

Perhaps the most unexpected feature of all is the inclusion of ornate pinnacles and carved gargoyles. These decorative, menacing creatures are typical of Neo-Gothic design and are used as architectural flourishes. Walking underneath one on Patton Avenue is quite an Asheville experience! Of course, this begs the question: Is the Jackson Building haunted?

Like many places in Asheville, there's plenty of lore surrounding the tower. Tenants and workers who frequent the building have reported unexplained footsteps, glimpses of shadowy figures from office windows, and rumors of lingering spirits that still dwell where the observation deck once stood.
