North Carolina is full of must-see places, from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Outer Banks. Yet, we also see our fair share of tourists, as one of the most popular destinations in the south and the 6th most visited in the US. So, clearly sometimes we're looking for some spots that are truly North Carolina. Outside of Raleigh hides an amazing, whooping 46,768 acres of water, hiking, and beauty.
Jordan Lake in Apex encompasses 14,000 acres of this undeveloped reservoir.
Even in the winter it retains unique, wetland beauty.
There are nine access areas scattered throughout the area. In addition you'll find 1,000 campsites that range from RV hookups, primitive camping, to group camping.
Not far from Raleigh, it's the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. You feel as if you've stepped a million miles away into untouched nature.
Year-round, it's a popular place for fisherman, hikers, outdoor enthusiasts, and even those just looking for a quick afternoon of solitude.
During the warmer months, you can take advantage of the seven swim beaches in the recreation area. When it's chillier, there are still plenty of hiking trails encompassing over 14 miles. The hikes range from primitive and sometimes strenuous to family friendly.
Aside from being a great place to getaway, there are some fun facts about the lake and its history. For example, over 450 prehistoric artifacts have been discovered in the area. After the terrible hurricane that struck the Cape Fear River Basin in 1945, actions were directed for a new water source - so began New Hope Lake. The name changed to B. Everett Jordan Dam and Lake in 1973 in honor of the former senator from North Carolina. Today, Jordan Lake supplies water for surrounding cities, wildlife conservation and flood and water quality control. In total, the area is 46,678 acres.
In the colder months we all usually prefer to stay indoors. Yet the central and eastern region of the state usually see milder temps - more so than say the mountains or Piedmont. If you're looking for a good way to still get some fresh air in the winter, Jordan Lake State Recreation Area is a great place to do it.
Jordan Lake is a great place to get away from it all and can be found at -
