Locals Love This Iconic Roadside Spot in North Carolina – Here’s Why
The odd tale of a mysterious hidden gem in North Carolina and how one strange mailbox can teach us much more than we think.
Truly a hidden gem in North Carolina, there is a mysterious mailbox placed on the sand shores of the Bird Island Reserve with two simple words posted on the side: Kindred Spirit. The Kindred Spirits Mailbox isn’t a roadside attraction per se, but it evokes the same sense of odd curiosity that stirs in us to stop and take a closer look. I would say that the mailbox would be more of a seaside attraction if anything, because you can find this oddity right on the sandy shore. What may have seemed like a fun and cute idea at first glance ended up becoming a movement that has lasted for decades.
It is funny how one little thing we do can spark motivation or inspiration in others. We all have our differences, but we have more in common than we tend to think. We all have shared experiences that make us humans and thus connect us together in a beautiful way. This will become evident when visiting the Kindred Spirits Mailbox.
The History of the Kindred Spirits Mailbox
What once seemed like a fun idea by a man named Frank Nesmith ended up sparking a movement that has lasted decades. Nesmith was a local gentleman who placed the mailbox and a journal for others to jot down their thoughts. To his surprise, other locals traveled the sandy pathways to the mailbox and before he knew it the notebook was full. They had to keep adding more and more notebooks to restock the mailbox.
A Connection No One Expected
Over the years, more and more people started to find their way to this spot to write down their most intimate thoughts. The journals would be filled by people who would share grievances about lost loved ones and celebrate joyous moments such as engagements, to grateful moments reflecting on life. One thing became apparent after reading through the many lines of the journals: we were indeed kindred spirits.
What to Expect When Visiting
The nature of this remote spot on the beach invoked deeper feelings and thoughts. The peaceful presence of the natural elements made this a wonderful place to visit. Many people would come and sit with the notebook while listening to the cadence of the sea before jotting down their own handwritten entries. At one point, others sought to commercialize the area, but the heartfelt pleas from the journals changed the outcome, and instead, the area is now a preserved land so others can enjoy the beauty for years to come.
Where is the Kindred Spirits Mailbox?
Because this area is remote, it will take a bit of effort to get there, but it is well worth the trek. I would suggest following the AllTrails map for the trail to the Kindred Spirit Mailbox via Sunset Beach. Take the time you have while walking to reflect, and let the natural beauty of the area wash over you. Then, when you reach the notebook, you too can add to the growing collection of those who are just like you.
What Makes This Roadside Attraction So Popular
This heartwarming hidden gem in North Carolina started off as a local favorite, but now people from all over the globe come to collect their thoughts. Perhaps Nesmith knew something that we all need to be reminded of, that we are indeed very alike. The more we can embrace the unity of the human experience, the more we can unify and have genuine compassion for one another. We truly are kindred spirits.
