Every day, hundreds of travelers visit Asheville, for the sights, the scenery, the unique eclectic vibe. Many passing through have no idea of something more sinister lurking not far from the city, but most locals do. Located at Beaucatcher Mountain in Asheville, Helen's Bridge is rooted in legend and unexplainable occurrences. Some involving the paranormal, others involving strange sights witnessed near the bridge, and some encounters have even left physical injury.
The bridge was originally known as Zealandia's bridge, and while beautiful in architechture and scenery, it is now known as Helen's bridge for a devastating reason. After Helen's daughter died in a fire, inconsolable and grief-stricken Helen hung herself from the bridge. Today, she appears wearing a long gown, asking the whereabouts of her child. The strangest part is that there are multiple reports of car trouble at the bridge. Either a battery dying directly on the bridge, or even days after. Several people who have visited Helen's Bridge for a paranormal experience (and some who have simply just visited) had looming car issues during or after.
While most 'haunted' bridges cause trouble when you're only present on the bridge, it seems darker spirits are at work...especially since even a week after visiting, your car might suddenly break down, or you might even spot a moving figure from the corner of your eye. Due to the extreme paranormal nature, investigators, journalists, authors, and paranormal investigation crews have visited this bridge on a dark night to see if they can catch a sight of Helen...or even have their own paranormal experience.
It's not only Helen, but strange and dark apparitions cited around the area. The high volume of paranormal activity around this bridge fuels much of the legend. People have described seeing monster-like figures lurking behind the dense brush. Even slaps, punches, and scratches have been reported.
North Carolina, and especially Asheville, are home to many ghosts stories. Ranging from the Pink Lady at the Grove Park, Biltmore Estate, Chicken Alley, even the architect buried in the walls of his own church. Yet, Helen's Bridge seems like the one place where paranormal activity is at such at high, you're likely to spot Helen...or something worse.
With Halloween fast approaching, now is the perfect time to see if the mystery is true. Have you visited here for yourself or have any stories you want to share?
