Honor Native American Heritage At New Mexico’s Amazing Fire And Ice Art & Dance Gathering

El Malpais National Monument in New Mexico offers a unique landscape of volcanic fields and ice caves, and hosts the Fire and Ice Native American Art and Dance Gathering.

El Malpais National Monument in the western part of New Mexico is home to a varied landscape that can be considered otherworldly. It's known as the land of fire and ice for good reason: not only is it home to a large volcanic field but to caves that keep cold enough for ice to form. It's a land of contrasts, a land of beauty, and a land of culture. In the areas surrounding this great national monument live Native American artists who will share their art and talents at the upcoming Fire and Ice Native American Art and Dance Gathering. Held May 20-21, 2023 at El Malpais National Monument, this is one event you won't want to miss.

Located in Grants in western New Mexico, the El Malpais National Monument was established in 1987. It has over 115,000 acres of land overseen by the National Park Service.

The diverse landscapes here consist of badlands, volcanic fields, cinder cones, and a series of lava tubes. This is quite a special place.

Some of the lava tubes here trap enough cold air for ice to form. This really is the land of fire and ice!

In addition to protecting all of the natural wonders and resources in the area, El Malpais also protects cultural resources. To celebrate the Native American culture in the area, El Malpais National Monument will host the Fire and Ice Native American Art and Dance Gathering.

This incredible festival will be held May 20-21, 2023 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. each day at the El Malpais Vistor Center.

During this two-day event, area artists will showcase their art, pottery, sculptures, jewelry, weaving, and so much more. This is an opportunity to learn about the meaning behind the art and the connection to their culture.

And, of course, you'll have the opportunity to purchase art directly from the artists!
