7 Fun New Mexico Spots for Kids (That Parents Will Love Too)
Discover seven fun adventures in New Mexico that will tire out kids and make parents happy.
Kids seem to have an endless supply of energy. From the moment they wake up until bedtime, it can be exhausting for those of us who have kids or are around kids every day. Honestly, I wish I had half the amount of energy my 8-year-old daughter has! If a child has no way to expend their energy, they often become restless. Restlessness often leads to whining, and that's certainly no fun for any of us. If you have restless children in your life, taking them to one of the following kid-friendly attractions in New Mexico should help, at least for a few hours (and that will make everyone involved very happy!):
1. E3 Children's Museum & Science Center in Farmington
For a hands-on learning experience that also happens to be fun, head to E3 Children's Museum & Science Center. Open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., parents can take kids for some all-day educational entertainment as they learn about light, sound, magnets, shadows, and more.
2. Red River Ski & Summer Area in Red River
Whether you come here in the winter or the summer, there's always something happening at Red River Ski & Summer Area. During the winter months with a layer of snow on the ground, families can find thrills on the mountain by skiing, snowboarding, or snow tubing. There are three terrain parks for those who are a bit more daring. Summer looks a bit different in Red River with a zipline, an aerial park, a scenic chairlift ride, mini golf, disc golf, and even summer tubing.
3. Clayton Lake State Park and Dinosaur Trackways in Clayton
What kid doesn't love dinosaurs? My daughter has had a deep love for prehistoric creatures since the age of two, so I know she would love Clayton Lake State Park. Not only will you find a lake here, but a large collection of dinosaur footprints. Take a hike along the Dinosaur Trail for an awe-inspiring experience!
4. ABQ BioPark in Albuquerque
With a botanical garden, a zoo, and an aquarium, you can easily spend an entire day at ABQ BioPark exploring and learning about a wide variety of plant and animal species. You can purchase a ticket for one or all of the attractions at this family-friendly park online. From what you can experience, the admission fees are quite affordable, especially for residents of New Mexico.
5. White Sands National Park
White Sands National Park is a must-visit for anyone, but it's also a great place for kids to explore and experience one of the most unique deserts in the world. Hiking, camping, and scenic drives are all options here, but what's even better is sledding. That's right, bring a sled with you and go sledding down the white sand dunes that look like snow. It's so much fun!
6. Alameda Park Zoo in Alamogordo
As one of the oldest zoos in the Southwest, Alameda Park Zoo first opened in 1898 and remains a popular family attraction today. The zoo is small with only 200 animals, and admission is reasonable at $3 to $5 per person for an affordable family-friendly day trip. The zoo also has a concession stand, a playground, and a gift shop. Visit the zoo's website for more information.
7. McGinn's PistacioLand in Alamogordo
Want to see the world's largest nut? How about a tour of the farm in an open-air vehicle? Well, it sounds like you should visit McGinn's PistachioLand! Here you will learn all about how pistachios are grown as you travel through the orchard. There's also a free pistachio tasting as well as a free wine tasting for the adults. You can also grab a cup or cone of pistachio ice cream while you're here. This is such a fun place that both kids and adults will love.
