Visit The Heart of Revolutionary War History In New Jersey At Old Barracks Museum
New Jersey played an incredible role in the Revolutionary War - with even General George Washington paying many a visit to the region and famously crossing the Delaware. You can visit many of these sites, including at one of the country's most incredible parks - but many people forget that there was another side to the Revolutionary War here that played out long before we were a state. That's why we were so blown away to discover that people can discover the hidden secrets of the British presence in Colonial New Jersey through a visit to the Old Barracks Museum. This historic museum in New Jersey, found in the state capital of Trenton, is a fully restored colonial barracks and is one of the few remains of the 1776 Battle of Trenton. Today, it's a popular and affordable living history museum that offers an incredible look into an often-forgotten chapter of New Jersey history.
The Old Barracks have been lovingly preserved since they served as housing for British soldiers back in the 1700s, and they can still be visited today.
It's amazing to see just how many little details are still standing, including the royal coat-of-arms belonging to King George II.
But this isn't just a preserved historic building like so many - this is a living history museum, where re-enactors offer a unique look into colonial times from the other side.
The re-enactments are the highlight here, with stunningly accurate depictions of colonial life and battles.
Through the year, there are special events - like this February tribute to the history of Black soldiers and the role they played in the Revolution and later conflicts.
It's not all about the battles, either - a visit to the Barracks is an amazing way to learn about farming, blacksmithing, and other crafts.
In many ways, The Old Barracks is the heart of historic Trenton, and the talented re-enactors and historians play a key role in events and parades around town through the year.
