The Ultimate Fall Adventure Awaits With These 3 Haunted Places in Nebraska
Are you brave enough to explore some of Nebraska's most haunted landmarks?
Fall is the best time of the year for ghost stories and making trips to spooky locales, and Nebraska has no shortage of great haunted spots. These aren’t your typical spots either—no haunted houses or hotels here. These odd and eerie places have some of the strangest stories behind them, and that’s what makes them some of my favorite haunted places in the state.
1. Hummel Park - Omaha
Located in Omaha, Nebraska, at face value, this beautiful little park looks like the perfect way to spend an afternoon, but at night, when shadows begin to lengthen and unknown noises start to be heard, things begin to feel ominous. There have been many rumors about what makes Hummel Park a supernatural place. Some say it has long been a hotspot for satanic rituals, with graffiti-covered sigils and symbols spray-painted in remote corners of the park. Others claim it to be haunted by the ghosts of African Americans who were lynched in the park, and that their spirits weigh heavily on the branches of trees. All this is merely speculation; no hard evidence has ever been found that any satanic rituals or lynchings took place in the park, but rumors persist.
One particular supernatural incident occurs at what locals call the “Stairs to Hell.” This staircase is reportedly impossible to keep track of. Those who climb up it report a different number of steps than those who climb down it.
2. Scotts Bluff National Monument - Scotts Bluff County
This monument towers 800 feet above the North Platte River and has served as a landmark for countless communities, from the Native Americans to pioneers of the Oregon Trail, to modern-day travelers passing from one side of the country to the other. Rich with geological, paleontological, and human history, there is a ton to discover in the 3,000 acres of parkland. There is, however, a mysterious side to this beautiful national monument. At midnight, it has been reported that a strange woman dressed all in white has been seen wandering at the bluff’s base. No one knows her name, and no one knows what she is doing at the monument. Nobody has ever been close enough to get a good look at her before she disappears.
3. Nebraska State Capitol Building - Lincoln
The Nebraska State Capitol is a behemoth at 400 feet tall. It is one of the tallest buildings in the state, and its tower design functions as a beacon for the state. It was constructed between 1922 and 1932 and has since been designated a National Historic Landmark. Of course, buildings with such a lengthy history and with so many people coming and going, it's impossible not to have an accident or to develop a ghost story or two. The building is supposedly haunted by the apparition of someone falling. Visitors have said that they have even heard crying and screaming as the person falls. Stories claim that the figure is thought to be either a man who had a heart attack while putting up Christmas lights, a workman who fell while hanging a light bulb, or a visitor who fell over the railing. All these stories are merely rumors, but the reports have continued.
