10 Legitimately Fun Things You Can Do In Nebraska Without Spending A Dime

Discover free and fun winter activities in Nebraska, from wildlife refuges to historic sites.

If you're feeling the holiday financial pinch, you're not alone. How about getting your mind off of your worries and having fun for a while, all at no cost to you (other than maybe some gas money)? There are tons of free, fun activities for you to enjoy in Nebraska this winter while taking a little break from the real world.

1. Get wild at the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge - Valentine

There's no charge to visit the beautiful wildlife preserve. If you're lucky, you'll see bison and elk grazing peacefully in the grass.

2. Go down the slides at Gene Leahy Mall - Omaha

This is one of those must-do things in Omaha. The slides are open year-round, but in winter be prepared to wipe away snow, ice, or water before you zip to the bottom.

3. ...Then experience the rest of the Old Market - Omaha

Gene Leahy Mall and Heartland of America park are beautiful any time of year, and touring the brick streets of the Old Market is always a fun adventure.

4. Visit the Knight Museum & Sandhills Center - Alliance

Learn all about the Alliance region at this informative museum. There is also a large genealogy section for anyone interested in finding out about their family's lineage.

5. After a snow, head out to your local park or other wide-open space for cross-country skiing...

This is an outstanding cardio workout and the perfect winter alternative to running. Ok, the equipment isn't free, but if you borrow what you need from a friend or neighbor you'll be all set.

6. ...or go to your local sledding hill for some downhill action.

You don't technically even need a sled for this. When I was a kid we sledded down hills on pieces of cardboard, garbage can lids, and whatever else was nearby.

7. Hit up your local library to expand your mind.

This one might seem a little obvious, but in the days of smartphones, tablets, and laptops, sometimes just sitting down with a quiet book is a radically new idea. Give it a try, especially if it's not in your normal recreational rotation.

8. Do the time warp at the Townsley-Murdock Site - near Alda

This is just one of the many places in Nebraska where you can still see wagon wheel ruts in the ground from traveling pioneers. The Mormon Trail crossed through here; now this beautiful two-acre site next to the Wood River is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

9. Spend a day at Pioneers Park and Nature Center - Lincoln

There's so much to do at this park, and so many incredible nature scenes, that it's hard to believe it's located in city limits. You can easily spend an entire day walking the trails and visiting the nature center.

10. Take a little trip to the Aksarben Aquarium - Gretna

Often ignored in favor of Schramm Park, the aquarium is a neat little spot that deserves a visit on its own. There are some pretty weird looking stuffed fish and whatnot on the walls, but there are also some interesting aquarium exhibits and lots of information on local wildlife.
