The 11 Coolest Attractions In Nebraska That Not Enough People Visit

Everyone's got their favorite places that they tend to visit over and over. Why not step a little outside of the ordinary and explore a place you've never been? These attractions are all beyond awesome, but a lot of Nebraskans don't even know they exist. Get out there and experience something new! (This list is in no particular order.)

1. High Plains Homestead, near Crawford

Go to this panhandle gem for a taste of real pioneer living. Stay in the bunkhouse, eat a delicious meal at the Drifter Cookshack that's been cooked over a fire, and wander the historic buildings and beautiful grounds. It's the perfect place to unwind.

2. Mayhew Cabin and John Brown's Cave, Nebraska City

This historic cabin sits atop the only verified Underground Railroad stop in Nebraska. Go below ground to see a reconstruction of a space that escaped slaves might have stayed in on their way to freedom.

3. Flatwater Folk Art Museum, Brownville

This under-appreciated treasure in extreme southeastern Nebraska is located in a historic church. In their own words, it contains "an art collection of vernacular expressions and creations reflecting the human spirit and passion of common folk."

4. Legacy of the Plains Museum, Gering

Explore the rich history of western Nebraska dating back to the Native Americans who inhabited the area long before European settlers. Exhibits include information on westward expansion and the challenges of raising crops in an inhospitable environment.

5. Fort Kearney Museum, Kearney

This small museum is jam-packed with some seriously fascinating artifacts from all over the world, including a genuine Egyptian mummy. Plus, out back is the only glass-bottom boat ride in the midwest which you absolutely have to check out.

6. Panorama Point, Kimball County

"Hike" to the highest point in Nebraska...which is actually in the middle of a field atop a slight hill. Sign the visitor's register to leave your mark on this uniquely Nebraskan spot.

7. Anderson Island, Ord

This recreation area is located just east of Ord and offers a truly beautiful place to go tubing, canoeing, swimming, or just relaxing on the calm North Loup River.

8. Steamboat Bertrand Museum, DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge, near Blair

The remains of a steamboat that wrecked on the Missouri River in 1865 are displayed here for the education and enjoyment of everyone. It's a truly underrated attraction that gives a unique glimpse into what life was like in the late 19th century.

9. The Durham Museum, Omaha

This well-known reaction definitely gets its fair share of traffic, but it's included here because it is all too often overlooked in favor of more famous nearby attractions (we're looking at you, Old Market and Omaha Zoo).

10. Long Pine State Recreation Area, near Long Pine

Located in Brown County, this recreation area is a little like paradise. In fact, it was once home to a popular resort known as Hidden Paradise. The resort is long gone, but the serenity and incredible natural beauty of the area are perfect reasons to visit.

11. University of Nebraska State Museum at Morrill Hall, UNL Campus, Lincoln

You may not think to visit a college campus in your leisure time, but Morrill Hall houses Nebraska's largest natural history museum. Permanent exhibits include massive fossils, and rotating exhibits include plenty of interactive and unique displays. All facets of science are represented here - you will not be disappointed.
