8 Places You Recognize From Missouri That Showed Up In Famous Movies
Missouri's diverse geography makes it an ideal movie backdrop, with several notable films shot in various locations across the state.
Missouri makes the perfect movie backdrop due to its varied geographic terrain. You would actually think that more movies would be made here, but maybe the crazy unpredictable weather is what prevents that from happening. Here are a few spots in Missouri that if you look hard enough, you will see in the movies.
1. Gone Girl, Cape Girardeau

2. Winter’s Bone, rural Forsythe and Branson
The amazing performance that launched Jennifer Lawrence's career took place right here in rural Missouri. Maybe you recognize the location above.
3. The Abyss, Bonne Terre Mine, Bonne Terre
The Bonne Terre Mine served as the location for some of the underwater scenes in the 1989 film. They took advantage of it being the largest underground lake in the world.
4. You’re Next, Home near Columbia Country Club
The 2011 horror film was filmed in Columbia, at a mansion near the Country Club. The above shot was captured using Google Earth.
5. Escape from New York, Chain of Rocks Bridge, St. Louis
This old Rt. 66 bridge was the location where the chase scene at the end of the 1981 movie occurred. Although the movie is called Escape from New York, much of it was actually filmed in East St. Louis. Other locations of note include Union Station and the Fox Theater.
6. Up In The Air, St. Louis
The movie Up in the Air starring George Clooney took place in several airports, one being the Lambert International Airport in St. Louis. Other Missouri locations were also in the film, including the Cheshire Inn, and Afton High School in Afton.
7. Albino Farm, Missouri Ozarks

8. Paper Moon, Missouri Trust Bank, St. Joseph
This classic 1973 film starring Ryan O'Neal and daughter Tatum was largely filmed in Missouri. Locations in St. Joseph include the Missouri Valley Trust Co. Bank and the St. Charles Hotel.
