There are several historic hotels in Mississippi that are believed to be haunted. One of the most notorious, though, is Monmouth Historic Inn. The residence-turned-inn boasts great accommodations, a beautiful garden, and a resident ghost, who has been known to check on guests in their rooms! Monmouth Historic Inn in Natchez isn’t just one of the most haunted hotels in Mississippi, but it’s one of the most haunted hotels in the entire South.

A National Historic Landmark, it was built in 1818.

Though it’s been an inn for many years, it originally served as a residence and was the home of General John A. Quitman.

Quitman not only lived in Monmouth. He died in Monmouth, too. There’s some dispute as to the cause of death. Some say he was poisoned and killed by abolitionists, while other reports list the cause of death as National Hotel Disease.

According to many, Quitman has never left the mansion he once called home.

Over the years, a phantom man in a military uniform has been seen roaming the halls of Monmouth. Many believe it’s the ghost of the general.

Guests have reported several run-ins with the general, with some claiming to have been woken up by him in their rooms.

What a wake-up call!

The general has also been seen roaming Monmouth’s famous gardens.

Who can blame him?! The gardens are stunning!

Word of the ghostly sightings has spread far and wide, leading to Monmouth landing a spot on Country Living’s list of the most haunted hotels in America.

Just prior to the recognition by Country Living, the website Love Exploring named Monmouth the most haunted hotel in Mississippi.
