If you were compiling a list of famous American architects, Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Sullivan would likely be on it. Extremely talented, the two men designed numerous buildings – including the Charnley-Norwood House, which is right here in Mississippi. What’s more, you can actually tour the historic home. Located in Ocean Springs, the Charnley-Norwood House offers visitors the chance to step inside one of the most important architectural venues in the country.

The home was designed in 1890 by Louis Sullivan, who is often revered as the father of the skyscraper.

Sullivan didn’t design the home alone, though. He was assisted by his young draftsman, Frank Lloyd Wright, who would later become known as the father of modern architecture.

In 1897, just seven years after the home's construction, it was destroyed by a fire and re-built almost immediately.

Straying from the norm of 19th century Victorian architecture, Sullivan’s designs included hallmark features, such as rooms that flowed into each other, horizontal design elements, and the use of natural materials and glass throughout the home.

These trademark traits can clearly be seen in the Charnley-Norwood House, which is brimming with beautiful workmanship. During the tour, you can do more than admire the intricate details of the home, though.
