Open for Over 60 Years, Capri Drive-In Theater Still Provides Nostalgic Summer Magic for Families in Michigan

Make your summer epic. Spend a dreamy night under the twinkling stars at this iconic vintage theater in Michigan.

What is more magical than a summer night under the twinkling stars? Watching your favorite movie at Capri Drive-In Theater in Coldwater, Michigan, of course! Most of us have been to a drive-in movie theater before, but nothing beats a night at Capri Drive-In. For over 60 years, this family-owned vintage theater has been creating memories for locals and visitors alike. Some time ago, it was named one of the top drive-in movies in the US, so it’s obvious that Capri is loved by many. If you have yet to spend a dreamy night here, I’d encourage you to plan a trip to Coldwater to experience the best drive-in theater in Michigan. Your summer nights will be filled with fond memories you won't forget.

Coldwater is one of our favorite destinations in Michigan for a day trip or a weekend getaway. Whether you’re a foodie, history buff, or outdoor enthusiast, you'll find something to do in this delightful southern Michigan town. I can think of another reason to visit this family-friendly community, though: to step back in time for a night at Capri Drive-In Theater

Since opening in the summer of 1964, Capri Drive-In has been the go-to spot for folks in Branch County, Indiana, and Ohio. This old-fashioned attraction is one of nine theaters in Michigan still creating nostalgic memories for us all. Between two screens and 16 acres of land, the venue can host up to 900 cars. What sets Capri apart from the rest is that this drive-in movie earned its stars on the National Register of Historic Places. It means the retro theater has played a significant role in the culture of South Michigan and the surrounding areas.

From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the theater operates seven days a week. During the off-season, you can catch a movie here on the weekends. Plus, I love that they host various fun events throughout the year, including fireworks shows, Halloween festivities, and carload nights. For a unique experience, guests can also rent out the entire drive-in for special occasions. How cool would that be?

No matter the time of year, drive-ins are a fun activity for the entire family. However, this retro venue really comes alive in the warmer months. A Friday night at Capri has become a tradition for kids, adults, families, couples, friends, and even fur babies. Unlike regular theaters, I like the freedom and comfort of a drive-in. Some folks prefer sitting in the back of their trucks under the glowing night sky. Others would rather bring their lawn chairs or rent them from the concession stand to experience the drive-in movie magic. Personally, I enjoy curling up inside my car with my seat slightly reclined, listening to the movie on my radio. Not to mention, I like adjusting the volume to my liking without interrupting other moviegoers.

The best part about a night at Capri? The two-for-one movie deal. You can watch two current box office movies without breaking the bank. Moreover, kids four and under are free; flat carload rates and several other discounts are offered as well. The prices at the snack bar are reasonable, too. For a small fee, Capri allows outside food, but why not support the concession stand? Snacks include all our favorites, like popcorn, hot dogs, nachos, pizza, ice cream, candy, soda, and more. If you ask me, getting goodies from the concession stand is an iconic part of the movie experience.

Honestly, I can’t think of a better way to spend a summer night than watching a movie under the stars at Capri Drive-In. Between its vintage charm, the wholesome family-friendly fun, and affordable prices, you’ll have the time of your life here. As one of the best things to do in Michigan, your dreamy summer nights will be filled with nostalgic drive-in movie memories.

Before heading to the movies, I suggest visiting the FAQ page on the Capri Drive-In website for a list of rules and regulations. Cash is preferred, but an additional fee applies for credit or debit card payments.
