After Isabella Stewart Gardner inherited a substantial amount of money in the 1890s, she and her husband decided to expand their art collection. And then their idea of building a museum became a reality.

Isabella had quite a bit of input into the design which is inspired by the Palazzo Barbaro in Venice, Italy. And no detail is spared in this courtyard.

While this museum houses some impressive works of art from around the world, most visitors spend their time admiring the courtyard, which is a work of art in itself.
