With More Than a Dozen Model Trains To Operate, This Small Town Museum In Massachusetts Is A True Hidden Gem

Wenham Museum in Massachusetts offers family-friendly, interactive exhibits, including popular model trains, to teach visitors about history.

Did you know there is a family-friendly history museum in the little town of Wenham, Massachusetts?  Simply called the Wenham Museum, it is better known by local children as “the train museum.” This hidden gem is filled with dozens of hands-on exhibits that teach what life was like in past centuries.

While the museum is definitely a fun place for toddlers and preschoolers, it contains several historical exhibits that older children and adults will also enjoy. I have been taking my kids here since they were little and they still like to visit!

The museum has been teaching and entertaining visitors for a century and has over 40,000 historical items inside. It is a great place to learn about history while having fun!

This year, the museum is featuring several special exhibits in honor of its historic anniversary.

The most popular exhibits in the museum are the model trains. The Bennett E. Merry Train Gallery, better known as "the train room," has 21 trains that run through 10 different layouts.

Visitors of all ages can push buttons on the sides of the exhibits and start the trains rolling. The gallery typically has train experts on hand to answer questions and help maintain the exhibit.

You could easily spend hours here watching these tiny model vehicles speed through miniature replicas of local towns and urban landscapes.

The museum also has lots of other fun things from the past. There are old dollhouses, a hands-on house, and an impressive toy soldier collection.

Many of these exhibits have an interactive portion to them, so kids can use their senses to explore while learning about history.

The Wenham Museum also puts on several special exhibits that change throughout the year. These exhibits often blend play and literacy together to create fun learning opportunities.

At this new "Peter Rabbit" exhibit, kids will have a blast planting flowers in Mr. McGregor's garden.
