As one of the original 13 colonies, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is home to some of the most historic places in the country. In fact, you can see several historic sites along Boston's Freedom Trail or around the town of Concord. With hundreds of years of history, it may come as no surprise that many historic places around the state are known to be haunted. One haunted and historic house in Massachusetts we are going to discuss today is The House of the Seven Gables.

Made famous in a work of literature by author Nathaniel Hawthorne, The House of the Seven Gables is worth a visit by both history buffs and ghost hunters alike.

Built in 1668, this mansion sits along the sea in Salem, Massachusetts, and once belonged to Captain John Turner I. Since his death in 1680, it was owned by several generations of the Turner family followed by the Ingersoll family.

Although it is known as The House of the Seven Gables from Nathaniel Hawthorne's book by the same name, it's also known as the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion.

Depending on who you ask, the house may or may not actually be haunted. However, you can certainly take a tour and learn about its storied history.

There are many people throughout the years that have seen things that can only be described as paranormal. From shadowy figures to the ghost of Nathaniel Hawthorne's very own cousin, Susan Ingersoll, who had lived at The House of the Seven Gables, there is a certain belief that hauntings do happen here.

Lights and faucets also go on and off on their own as well. That's enough to send a chill down your spine!

Even the attic has seen its fair share of activity. Apparently a spectre of a little boy can occasionally be seen playing here. And those who are downstairs may hear footsteps and a child's laughter.
