I Love Maryland—But These 5 Places Are a Hard ‘No’ for Me
As much as I love the DMV, certain places in Maryland are a hard no for me, and you might even agree. Check them out!
Is there an overhyped destination in Maryland that you will never visit? I can bet you have a running list. I do! We’re all guilty of skipping some of the more popular spots for one reason or another — overcrowding, high price tags, or lack of authenticity. And guess what? It’s ok if we do that! After all, we don’t like the same things.
Some of us enjoy popular tourist destinations like Ocean City, while others prefer low-key attractions with local flavor. The good news is, there are enough attractions in Maryland to keep us all entertained and happy. As much as I love the Old Line State, I have my own list of things that I will never do. Check out my picks for a list of places in Maryland that are an “absolute no” for me (some might even surprise you).
1. The Capital Wheel, Oxon Hill

Did you know that one of the most common fears is acrophobia, the fear of heights? And guess what, I am one of those people. I don’t have a severe case, but I can suffer a mild panic attack in certain situations. So, it doesn’t make sense to keep riding rollercoasters or Ferris Wheels because I don’t want to be that person ruining a good time for others. Therefore, I will skip getting on the Capital Wheel in Oxon Hill. I have ridden other Ferris wheels before, and the rides are cool with lots of opportunities to snap beautiful pics. As pretty as the water views from National Harbor are at night, I will admire them from the ground. But you don’t have to! If riding the Capital Wheel is on your list, then savor every second of those gorgeous views.
2. Billy Goat Loop Trail, Potomac
If I were about 10 years younger, the four-mile Billy Goat Loop Trail would be my favorite hiking trail in Maryland. Between the rock scrambling and the views of the Potomac, there is so much to love about this adventure. The rugged terrain is exciting for hikers looking for their next big challenge, but unfortunately, I must sit this one out. My knees will thank me later. If you do choose to take on this trek (which I highly recommend), start early, bring lots of water, and wear sturdy boots. Hike the trail on a weekday to skip the crowds and find a quiet spot to soak up the jaw-dropping views.
3. Escape Room Attractions

Fans of escape rooms, don’t yell at me, I have nothing against them. In fact, I think the rooms are a great way to bond and team build with each other. Some years ago, I had an escape room app on my phone, and I loved every second of it. Naturally, I thought I would enjoy the real-life experience — boy, was I wrong! Apparently, I don’t like being locked in a small space with others working against a clock to escape.
So, even though I have a legit reason to avoid these attractions, don’t get it twisted, escape rooms are fun. And there are so many in Maryland worth checking out, including the fan favorite Breakout Games in Columbia. Past players can’t stop raving about the themed rooms, puzzles, and the fun and helpful Game Masters. I’d suggest this attraction for anyone wanting to try something different.
4. Skydive Baltimore, Churchville

Some attractions in Maryland are a no, but I might end up doing them at some point. But skydiving is a hard no for me, and I will never jump out of any plane unless it is on fire, and even then, I might be hesitant to do so. I have never been a daredevil or thrill seeker, and my fear of heights will win every time (and it has!).
For folks who are much braver than I am, check out Skydive Baltimore. It’s the only skydiving attraction in the area, so folks can expect a unique experience. And don’t worry, the company has been around for almost 40 years and has over a million jumps. If you have dreamed of seeing views of Baltimore Harbor, the Chesapeake Bay, and the Susquehanna River from two miles in the sky, tandem skydiving is the thing for you.
5. Arundel Mills, Hanover

Arundel Mills used to be my old stomping ground. I have so many memories of shopping and eating at the food court there. But if I am honest, between finding parking and dealing with the crowded food court, I would rather skip this destination altogether. And this has nothing to do with Arundel Mills because it’s the largest and coolest mall in Maryland, attracting millions every year. This retail giant has over 200 stores, plus the casino, Dave and Busters, and Medieval Times, making it a major shopping and entertainment spot for locals and visitors alike. For the best experience, I would avoid weekends and holidays or go early to avoid parking frustrations.
Folks, this is just my opinion, and I encourage you to do whatever floats your boat. There are tons of overhyped destinations in Maryland and plenty of low-key gems that we all love. They each serve their purpose: to entertain locals and visitors alike.
