It’s Hot Outside—But This Baltimore Museum Is Full of Wonder and Imagination (Plus Air Conditioning)

Summer heat getting to the family? It's the perfect time for a visit to the Maryland Science Center—because this interactive museum in Baltimore is teeming with fun.

Baltimore is one of my favorite places to visit in the summer, because it's right on the harbor, and that cool sea breeze can always be felt. As you explore the harbor and surrounding area, it always feels a little cool and refreshing—that is, unless it's one of those days. You know the ones—when the sun is shining so hard it feels like it's boring a hole in your scalp. On those heat wave days, you'll want to take the whole family to the Maryland Science Center, one of the most unique attractions in the city center.

This interactive museum in Baltimore is a popular spot for school trips, but it's all-clear for tourism during the summer. Whether the little ones in your party are obsessed with dinosaurs, want to get their hands on some unique technology, or just want to meet some scaly friends, this is the kind of place that curious kids can easily spend the whole day exploring.

The Maryland Science Center is a true institution around Baltimore, and this sprawling science museum is a favorite among kids of all ages. It features three floors of exhibits, a planetarium, and an observatory that offers incredible views. The museum first opened in 1976, but has been completely renovated over the years to add new wings.

Of course, it wouldn't be a museum without some dinosaurs on display! The skeletons and sculptures greet you soon after you enter, and the "Dinosaur Mysteries" exhibit is one of the most educational and intriguing of any museum on the East Coast. There's also a mock paleontological dig for curious kids to discover some bones themselves.

Newton's Alley is the signature exhibit here, which focuses on hands-on physical science. What better way to demonstrate physics concepts than to experience them on electric spheres, rolling puzzles, and so much more? The inertia table is one of the best optical illusions in the whole museum and makes an excellent photo op.

You can even meet some new friends here—the museum is home to some well-cared-for reptiles that get brought out for demonstrations by the staff occasionally. The box turtle is always a favorite, and you never know who'll show up next!

This is just the start—the museum is full of interactive exhibits, plus an IMAX theater featuring some of the most impressive visuals around. If you need a break while exploring, just head to the windows and take a load off while taking in the impressive views of Baltimore's inner harbor.
