Construction began in 1836 and was supposed to only last two years. However, the project ended up taking fourteen years to complete. This led to frustrated workers, who soon turned violent.

Riots often broke out at the site and rumors of men murdering each other started to occur.

One particular tale tells of a man who died when a nearby lock house was set aflame. His charred remains were found and some say his spirit wanders through the tunnel.

Local paranormal investigators have been to known to explore the tunnel and have recorded unembodied whispers and unexplained shadows.

If you want to explore the tunnel yourself, make sure to bring a flashlight, as this 3,118-foot long structure is quite dark inside.

Those who suffer from claustrophobia may want to sit this one out.
