But, there's one that continues to amaze us. Sure, it's well-known and not exactly a "hidden gem." But there's no denying that The Desert of Maine in Freeport is a totally unexpected find in a place like Maine. Check it out!
This totally unexpected attraction in Freeport actually has an interesting history.
The Desert of Maine actually started out as a family farm.
It was owned by the Tuttle family who moved to the 300 acre farm in 1797.
They successfully raised crops of potatoes and hay for several years before things went hayWIRE.
They spent years basking in the success of the land, without rotating the crops.
And sheep were allowed to overgraze the area.
Soon, the glacial silt that existed beneath the fertile surface of the land took over, spreading at an unmanageable speed.
They deserted the land and it never recovered.
The good news is that it now serves as a great learning environment.
Visitors to the Desert of Maine can take a trip through the desert museum.
But the best part is the tram tour that drives through the sandy, glacial silt.
Walking around is allowed, but for those who prefer to take it easy this is a great option!
The only remaining structure is the Tuttle family barn and inside is a museum showing what the family might have owned at the time.
And there are markers throughout the area, providing information.
Camping is also available through October!
In addition to tents, there are plenty of RV hookups as well for a full weekend stay at this incredible Maine attraction.
