Of all the history we have here in Maine, it's the history that touches small communities that we love most. Sure, it's interesting to hear about wars and forts, but when we walk into a building, home, or shop that's been around since long before we were here we're fascinated. The general store we're featuring today is a great example of the kind of history that touches communities and has been around for ages. So let's take a trip down a long country road to visit one of the oldest general stores in Maine.
The Hope General Store in Hope has been a central part of the community here for as long as anyone can remember. In fact, it's been around so long that most people probably don't even remember those early days. This photo dates back to the mid-1930s and not a lot has changed to the way it looks.
The building dates back to 1832, making it among the oldest in the town. Over the years it's been a general store, the town post office, and even a local Grange.
After an unfortunate closure, the store was brought back to life when the McClure family bought it in early 2019.
It still has all of the same charm it once did, plus a bit more. The Hope General Store is a great place to get lunch or take a snack home.
The menu is simple but delicious and there's a lot of love infused into everything they make.
We also love that it serves as the perfect spot to pick up a local gift. So much here is handmade and homemade, making it the perfect way to support local business
One of the things most people recall about the Hope General Store is the community focus. And that vibe stays strong here today. We love the pay-it-forward program where visitors can purchase something in advance for another patron.
The Maine love here runs deep and goes as far as being able to grab a few local brews.
This general store in Maine, considered the oldest in the state, is a must-visit if you love small-town feels. I personally love the locally made hot sauce, make sure you pick up a bottle when you go.
