The Christmas Parade In Maine That’s Unlike Any Other In The World
Few things feel more "Maine" than looking out over a body of water. Whether it's a lake. a river or the big blue sea, Maine is all about water. For this time of year, we particularly love Casco Bay. While it's always beautiful, there's one night each year that it absolutely sparkles with the spirit of Christmas. This event has been happening since 2001 and it's only become more wonderful.
For one of the most delightful holiday events in Maine, you'll want to head to Portland.
The idea for the Parade of Lights was born in 2001, during a conversation between Chris Kean and friends on...you guessed it...a boat!
The first year saw 32 boats making their way through the harbor. Since then there have been slimmer years, but that's mainly due to cold temperatures. This year is expected to be a stunner!
The boats are visible all along the harbor with DiMillo’s Marina and the Maine State Pier being the most popular spots from which to view.
But the most exciting way to participate is by booking a ride on one of the two Casco Bay Lines ferries allowing visitors to view all the action from the water. And, all profits from ticket sails go to SailMaine, an organization that provides scholarships for sailing lessons to local kids.
Watch as the boats travel through the water, but then stick around for the firework finale!
This year's event takes place on the evening of Saturday, December 15th. To learn more about the Casco Bay Lines way of watching, check out their website. Though, as of writing all tickets have been sold. But, do give them a call on 207-774-7871 to check for cancellations. You may just find a Christmas miracle!
