This museum details the equipment used to practice strange surgeries and the poisonous chemicals used in remedies. There is a lot to learn about our stumbles through medicine. Welcome to the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum.

A collection of old medicines, tonics, and equipment have a home here as informational displays about the history of making people feel better.

All along the walls, vials of both familiar and unfamiliar substances line every shelf, from roots and plants to dangerous chemicals and elements.

In the beginning, many aspects of science were experimental and often included what we now know as poisons.

Some of the medical equipment doesn't look too intimidating until you read how they used it.

A fun activity to do as you browse is to compare illnesses you have had to the historic remedies shown on the shelves. We're sure glad that the medical field has advanced over the years!

Though leeches are still kept in some hospitals to this day, the idea that you can draw out illness through the blood has been around for ages.

Leeches, other tools that cut holes in your skull to relieve pressure, and more are all part of the things on display.

In addition to the vast array of medical supplies, you'll find that the historic building and courtyard are a treat to the eyes as well.

Between the odd medical practices and the history in the building, you're bound to have a great time learning about the sometimes scary way illnesses were treated.

The New Orleans Pharmacy Museum is open from noon to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays through Saturdays.
