There’s No Chapel In The World Like This One In Louisiana
Rock Chapel in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana, is a historic and beautifully restored chapel built by Carmelite monks in 1891.
Hidden away in the woods of Northwestern Louisiana in historic DeSoto Parish is one of the most beautiful secret gems of Louisiana. Rock Chapel, of Carmel, LA, has a truly unique history and so much majestic beauty we know you are going to fall in love with it. Let's explore:
To reach this chapel, you have to travel down a few country roads, which is an experience in itself.
You will find this chapel hidden away on a hill at 1746 Smithport Rd, in Mansfield, LA.
The chapel was constructed in 1891 by Carmelite monks when there was a Carmelite Monastery nearby.
The monks gathered stones from around the area and joined them together with plaster made of mud.
This monastery did not survive for very long--in 1904 a fire destroyed the larger church and monastery.
The Rock Chapel is all that survives of this early 20th century religious community. The care and craftsmanship with which this chapel was built is easy to see when you visit.
To pay visit, you should call the DeSoto tourist bureau for instructions--they will provide you with a key to the locked gate.
This ensures that you will have a private and intimate experience with the chapel--just you and whoever you visit with.
The interior of the chapel is just as beautiful as the exterior.
There is a gorgeous cross, pictured here, that has been lovingly restored.
In fact, by the 1930s, the interior had fallen in disrepair.
In the 1960s the original frescos and murals, pictured here, were restored back to their original glory. They are simply breathtaking.
So go ahead and plan a visit to this magical Louisiana treasure.
We know you will fall in love with the majestic and quiet beauty found here.
