Louisiana is rich with ghost stories, that's for sure - and Manchac Swamp harbors one of the most spine-tingling spectral tales of them all. When you have a state that's as old as Louisiana, you're bound to run into a few spirits here and there, right? While most of our ghost stories are kept to plantations, restaurants, and even the occasional bar, there's one spooky place that might top them all, and that's the Manchac Swamp, a Louisiana haunted swamp.
Located just outside of New Orleans, Louisiana’s Manchac Swamp might just be one of the most beautiful places in the state.
These beautiful wetlands are picture-perfect in every way.
Everywhere you look, you’ll be surrounded by a sea of emerald green and beautiful cypress trees.
You could easily spend the whole day here, basking in its beauty.
It’s also a great place to spot wildlife.
Countless alligators, turtles, and migratory birds all call the Manchac Swamp home.
It’s no wonder why it’s such a popular destination for locals and tourists looking to immerse themselves in this natural paradise.
There are several swamp tour companies and kayak tours that would love to show you around these beautiful waterways.
But there’s another side to this swamp that’s a little less calming…
The alligator isn’t the only thing to be feared in these swamplands. Manchac Swamp also happens to be a haunted swamp.
The Manchac Swamp is believed to be haunted by the ghost of Julia Brown.
Julia Brown, also sometimes referred to as Julie White was a local voodoo queen who lived in the small town of Frenier at the turn of the 20th century.
She would often sit on her porch singing a little song, “One day I’m going to die and take the whole town with me.”
Imagine hearing that when walking by! On September 15, 1915, a powerful hurricane swept through the state, destroying the tiny town, killing over 50 in Frenier and also the neighboring town of Ruddock. The hurricane decimated the town, and many believe that the storm was caused by Brown herself. Many believe she placed a curse on the swamp because she felt like she was being taken for granted.
So the next time you find yourself in these murky swamps, you might want to take a little extra caution.
You wouldn’t want to come away with the curse of this haunted swamp in Louisiana on you, now would you?
