The Stunning Building In Louisiana That Looks Just Like Hogwarts
Explore the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist in Lafayette, Louisiana, which resembles a Hogwarts-like setting with its historic architecture and ancient oak tree.
Whether you're on team book or team movie (or both), the Harry Potter franchise is one of the most popular in modern history. Universal Orlando even built an entire amusement park where you can walk in the steps of the characters, pick out your own wand, and enjoy some Butterbeer. While we may not have anything quite like that here in Louisiana, that doesn't mean that our imaginations can't run wild when we think about some of the historic buildings and how they could be our own little Hogwarts in Louisiana.
There's one, in particular, that we think would make a good candidate for the wizarding world, and it's worthy of a visit. Let's check it out:
Right in the heart of downtown Lafayette, the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist is one of the most beautiful buildings in Louisiana.
It looks especially stunning against that sunset, right? You can easily make the connections to how this striking church could be our own little Hogwarts in Louisiana.
The land was donated by Jean Mouton in 1821, back when Lafayette was still called Vermilionville. The church is also home to the oldest cemetery in Lafayette, and you'll find it right next to the church.
Speaking of Vermilionville, while you're in the area you should absolutely check out Vermilionville, a living history museum that focuses on the day-to-day life of Acadians, some of the earliest settlers to this part of Louisiana.
Built in 1916, the Romanesque revival-style church is actually the third church built on the site.
The one that stands today is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
From the red brick to the detailed stained-glass windows, it's easy to imagine this unique building in Louisiana playing a part in a wizard's world, don't you think? Hogwarts Louisiana, anyone?
If you thought the exterior was incredible, just wait until you see the inside.
It's very reminiscent of the Great Hall from the movies. 10 points to Gryffindor! Although in a Louisiana Hogwarts, perhaps the houses would be more along the lines of Boudreau, Thibodeaux Leblanc, and Breaux!
Both guided and self-guided tours are offered daily.
Guided tours are $5, and you’ll learn all about the history of the church, the museum, and also get to visit the cemetery.
One of the church's main attractions is the ancient oak tree outside.
Probably the most famous oak in Lafayette, the tree is estimated to be about 500 years old, earning it a top spot as being one of the oldest living oak trees in the United States.
Louisiana is no stranger to show-stopping trees. Have you ever seen the Castle Tree in Chemin-A-Haut State Park?
Its twisted trunk does give us some Whomping Willow vibes from the films.
We could easily see the Weasley's car getting stuck in those branches. In a Louisiana Hogwarts version, maybe the car is replaced with a Mardi Gras float!
