Your Best Summer Experience Isn’t By Car, It’s on a Kentucky Steamboat

Ditch the road trip this summer and step aboard Kentucky’s most iconic steamboat for a scenic, stress-free journey along the Ohio River.

When summer hits Kentucky in full swing, most people instinctively hop in the car, crank up the A/C, and set off on a road trip. But what if the most unforgettable experience this season doesn’t involve traffic, GPS apps, or pit stops at gas stations? What if the perfect summer escape floats gently down the river—on the historic Belle of Louisville? While I do love a good summer road trip, especially one where I can roll the windows down, enjoy the cool summer nights, and always keep watch for fireflies and campfire smells, I think enjoying an evening on the Ohio River sounds right up my alley.

Docked at Louisville’s Waterfront Park along the Ohio River, the Belle of Louisville isn’t just any boat—it’s a living piece of history. Launched in 1914, she’s the oldest operating Mississippi River-style steamboat in the world. But this isn’t a museum piece under glass. She’s a fully functioning vessel offering public cruises all summer long, complete with scenic views, music, food, and the soothing rhythm of paddlewheel travel.

Aboard the Belle, time slows down in the best way possible. Instead of dodging semi-trucks on I-64 or arguing over directions, you’re watching the sun set over the river, drink in hand, while a breeze plays across the deck. It’s an experience that feels romantic and nostalgic, yet completely refreshing for modern travelers burned out on traditional tourism.

With various cruise options, like sightseeing cruises, nighttime haunted cruises, and Admiral’s dinners, the Belle has something for everyone. Families can learn about steamboat history and the ecology of the Ohio River through educational daytime trips. Couples can sip cocktails under string lights as live music drifts through the evening air. No car could ever offer this kind of charm.

What makes the Belle even more special is her rootedness in Kentucky culture. Operated by a local nonprofit, her staff is passionate about storytelling, history, and hospitality. Many of the cruises feature Kentucky-sourced meals, local musicians, or themed events that highlight Louisville’s heritage—from bourbon to bluegrass.

One of the best things about boarding the Belle is that it’s easily accessible without a car. Located just steps from downtown Louisville hotels, restaurants, and bike paths, it makes for the perfect car-free day trip or weekend adventure. Arrive by foot, by bike, or via public transit—and leave the rest to the river.

So this summer, when the open road starts calling, consider answering a different kind of invitation. Maybe one where you can let a captain guide you along your journey, and all you have to do is kick back and enjoy the ride. Because in Kentucky, your best summer experience isn’t behind the wheel. It’s standing on the deck of the Belle of Louisville, watching the shoreline drift by.
