Here in Kentucky, we know better than to take anything at face value. That inauspicious corn field in the middle of the state? It's sitting above a mega cavern that's home to the only fully underground zip line in the world. That Kentucky State Park in Slade? Oh, it's just the site to one of the most marvelous natural phenomena on the planet. And the unassuming little locale of Cave City, Kentucky? Well, it happens to be positively bursting with adventures both above and below ground.
Cave City, known as the Gateway to Mammoth Cave, is a tiny town of just over 2,500 located in south-central Kentucky. But make no mistake about it: Cave City is a place where the opportunities for adventure are limitless.
In Cave City, you can tour the world’s longest cave, going on a subterranean adventure you'll never forget.
This sandstone labyrinth encompasses more than 400 miles of known passageways, with more being discovered all the time. There's no place in the world as wildly wonderful as Mammoth Cave.
Cave City is also home to the Mammoth Cave Wildlife Museum, a wild adventure unlike any other. Here you'll discover some of the world's most wondrous inhabitants, from Kodiak bears and bighorn sheep to all varieties of creepy, crawly insects.
(Arachnophobes, take note: there's a particularly cringe-inducing exhibit at this museum!).
The wild adventures don't stop there. Cave City is home to Kentucky Down Under, an epic attraction where kangaroos hop about and crocodiles demand snuggles.
And in terms of prehistoric escapades, in Cave City, there is a place where dinosaurs roam free. This is Dinosaur World, a real-life Jurassic Park that features hundreds of life-sized dinosaurs, interactive exhibits, and even a dino-themed playground, all in the beautiful and wild landscape of southern Kentucky.
The scenic beauty of Cave City certainly deserves mention. It's not all gorgeous underground caves and grottos here; the above-ground adventures in Cave City are numerous. The hiking is incredible, but we say go big by taking to the skies.
At Mammoth Cave Adventures, there is an aerial ropes course that's fun for all ages, and also a zip line that's a total adrenaline rush.
Speaking of which, if thrills (and chills) are your thing, Cave City's haunted-village-meets-escape-room might be just up your alley.
The haunted village is open the end of September and every weekend in October, and the Escape Adventure is open year-round.
In the mood for a more relaxing adventure? Cave City is home to some beauteous bodies of water, making it an excellent place for kayaking and canoeing.
Paddling the Green River is always a good time, and the eponymous Green River Canoeing offers some amazing excursion options.
Charming and chock-full of amazing adventures, Cave City, Kentucky, is a place sure to capture your heart.
(And your stomach... don't forget to stop by Cave City Coffee and Creamery during your visit!)
Have you explored Cave City, Kentucky, recently? It's one of those places worth revisiting again and again... you never know what you'll discover!
