8 Unsolved Mysteries in Kentucky

Every state has unsolved mysteries, but in most cases they tend to be missing persons or murder. Kentucky  has its share of both, but some of ours have unusual circumstances. We also do have a few unique mysteries, and here are some of the most interesting unsolved mysteries in Kentucky:

1. On March 3rd, 1876, large chunks of meat "rained" from the sky across Olympia Springs in Bath County. A piece is still on display at the Arthur Baird Cabinet at Transylvania University. It is thought to be cyanobacteria, which is a gelatin-like substance.

2. In 1961, Betty Gail Brown, a Transylvania University student in Kentucky was found in a car on campus, strangled by her own bra. The case is still unsolved.

3. In 1997, Erica Lee Fraysure’s car was found in a remote area of Brooksville, Kentucky. All her belongings and such were still there, but she has not been seen since.

4. Mary Marrs Winebroad Cawein was found dead after attending a country club 4th of July party in 1965. It was determined she was drugged and then dosed with carbolic acid. The case was never solved, but 14 witnesses were called.

5. A John Doe was found in Daviess County in 1990, a few miles south of Philpot, Kentucky. The man had been stripped, bludgeoned, shot six times, along with having both hands and feet removed. The hands and feet were never found, nor was the killer.

6. Valley Hill in Springfield, Kentucky, has been said to have showers of golden lights that cause some to have visions. This is still unsolved but has been investigated many times by paranormal investigators and even the TV show "Unsolved Mysteries."

7. Octavia Hatcher of Pikeville supposedly lost her infant son to illness, and then took ill herself many decades ago. According to legend, she actually had a coma like disease which other neighbors then began to suffer. The lore is that when her husband had her dug up, there were claw marks on the coffin, but it has never been verified.

8. UFOs in Hopkinsville have been a topic of discussion since 1955. A family saw little green men and commenced shooting. The case was investigated but never solved, however it was said horned owls might have been the invaders.

The Bluegrass State has a few pages worth of murder and missing person cases still unsolved. Some of these other mysteries were very unique to Kentucky though. It isn't every day we hear about aliens or clawed up coffins from the inside.
