Welcome to the beautiful and charming town of Marysville, a historic spot in Kansas that should never be forgotten.

What is unique about this small Kansas town isn't just the history, though. There's something smaller that you might not notice about this town at first glance.

Marysville is actually home to a population of all-black squirrels, about 1/5 of the local squirrel population appearing with this unique melanistic coloration.

It's thought that they originated after being let out of a cage from a McMahon Carnival coming through one night, and since then, they have lived and bred with local squirrels to slowly turn into the larger population they have today.

They've completely embraced the black squirrels, going far enough to commission painted statues of all sorts to display around town.

It's not odd to see a black squirrel here and there, or even everywhere. However, drive safely through Marysville because if you harm one of these little black squirrels, you'll face a fine.

If you're visiting for black squirrels, make sure to visit local small businesses and visit the people who live here as well. There's more in Marysville than you think!

If you're looking for other things to do in Marysville besides squirrel spotting, you'll want to check out the Pony Express museum as well as the local history surrounding you.
