Kansas’s Fort Scott Is Changing To Winter Hours – Here’s How To Get The Most Out Of It

Fort Scott National Historic Site is one of our most-visited historic sites in Kansas. It's an incredibly popular destination for locals and out-of-towners, and a great place to learn about the rich history of the Sunflower State. It's open to visitors nearly every day of the year and always ranks high on lists of "must-visit places in Kansas," especially for those interested in learning more about the Bleeding Kansas and Civil War periods. While the park is open year-round, it's worth noting that the hours of operation do vary with the seasons, and as of November 1, 2023, the Fort Scott National Historic Site will be switching to winter hours. Here's everything you need to know about the switch:

Fort Scott has been a National Historic Site since 1978. The property has several surviving buildings and five acres of tallgrass prairie.

The fort served as an important military post during the Civil War and housed troops from as far as Indiana and Wisconsin. It also played a vital role during the Bleeding Kansas era.

The fort hosts a number of events throughout the year and draws visitors from all over.

Just because the seasons are changing doesn't mean that you can't still head out here, though!

From November 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024, the park's buildings will still be open under winter hours, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm daily.

The buildings are closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. The park's grounds and walkways are open every day of the year from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset.

This is such a fascinating and educational place that's perfect for a visit at any time of year!
