15 Amazing Attractions That Prove Once And For All There’s No Place Like Kansas

Welcome to the Sunflower State, where we have plenty of sunflowers in the fall, and even more sunsets throughout the year. When it comes to Kansas, most people think of it as a flat, empty state with nothing to do and nothing to see. Well, we think these amazing attractions prove otherwise! What do you think?

1. Grinter Farms

Of course, people from all over the United States have heard of Grinter Farms. It's one of the most photogenic and popular sunflower fields in America, and you'll have a hard time seeing it due to the mass of people who flock here as it blooms. We aren't the Sunflower State for nothing!

2. Lucas

Lucas is our most eccentric town, consisting of numerous art displays like the Garden of Eden, the mosaic-covered public toilet (that's shaped like a toilet) and The World's Largest Collection of World's Smallest Versions of World's Largest Things. You'll just have to see it to believe it!

3. Monument Rocks

This location is one of our coolest features, and it's been here since the huge inland sea that once covered Western Kansas left it behind. It's made of Niobrara Chalk, and you might even find yourself discovering little fossils as you walk around it.

4. Coronado Heights

Coronado Heights is probably the best picnic spot you'll find in Kansas. Who wouldn't want to dine both outside and in a castle? Of course, the castle isn't very large, but it marks the spot a famous explorer gave up his quest for gold.

5. The Santa Fe Trail

Near Dodge City, these marks were left behind by the hundreds of wagons that made their way through here so long ago. Today, you can faintly see the tracks as though you're following them yourself.

6. Council Grove

Council Grove is a great little town, but did you know it's home to quite a few amazing restaurants? There's no reason you should skip this place if you're looking for a weekend (or even longer) adventure.

7. Elk Falls

This tiny town features an annual outhouse decoration competition and a waterfall, but it's also knows as the World's Largest Living Ghost Town. We're a little confused on what that means exactly, but they say they're "Not dead yet!"

8. Four-State Lookout

Have you ever wanted to climb up somewhere high and see as far as you can see? Well, this point near White Cloud is where you can do just that! It's a breathtaking view, and one you can only see here.

9. Lindsborg

Lindsborg is our very own Swedish town, and you'll want to visit if you've never seen much of their culture. It's bright and colorful, and full of horses. What's not to love?

10. The Midland Railroad Hotel

Kansas has historic restaurants and inns a-plenty, but most of us have been to the Brookville Hotel or Hays House by now. Another great stop on your Kansas adventure is this Hotel where you can also expect some stellar cuisine.

11. Arikaree Breaks

Instead of traveling out of state to see the Grand Canyon, you can experience the same breathtaking feeling right here in Kansas. Arikaree Breaks is a huge area where you can see just how large and diverse our geography really is.

12. Milford (and Milford Lake)

Milford is a little town next to a lake where you can spend a day or a week just exploring. The lake is large and great for boating and fishing in the summer (if there's no algae blooms). Plus, the tiny town of Milford has everything you need without all the extra city noise.

13. The Gypsum Hills

Medicine Lodge houses part of another great geological feature of Kansas. These hills are all sorts of fun shapes, and covered with grasses and shrubs that make you feel like you're in another, drier state. It's also a great place to go horseback riding, I've been told!

14. St. Joseph Catholic Church (Damar)

Kansas is also home to a number of tall and beautiful cathedrals, but this one in small town Damar is by far one of our favorites. It's scenic, without the size you'd get from the Cathedral of the Plains.

15. Cross Timbers State Park

Kansas' state parks vary from prairie to forest, and Cross Timbers is on the forested end. Of course, it also features Toronto Lake, and the surrounding trails will keep you busy for days.
