Most People Have No Idea You Can Do This One Awesome Activity In Idaho
Craters of the Moon in Idaho transforms into a winter wonderland perfect for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
Skiing, snowboarding, sledding, fat biking -- Idaho has a lot to offer after snow begins to blanket the ground. But of all the things to do during the upcoming winter season, there's one activity that doesn't get nearly the attention that it should... and you can do it in the most unexpected place!
Ordinarily a volcanic wonderland to explore and spelunk, Craters of the Moon undergoes a dramatic transformation after the first snow...
Transforming into a surprisingly snowy haven, the namesake craters and rocky formations of the landscape are shrouded beneath a blanket of pristine white snow.
But even under the cover of festive snow, there's still something eerie about this treasured monument.
Fortunately, the often-overlooked beauty of Craters of the Moon comes to life in winter with plenty of family-friendly opportunities to explore.
Most notably, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
Every winter, the Automobile Loop through the monument is closed to motorized traffic and groomed for those who hope to check "Skiing On The Moon" off of their bucket list.
The groomed Winter Trail is 4-7 miles in length and can be tailored to both ability and time constraints. With mostly level terrain or gentle hills, most people can ski the entire loop in 2 to 4 hours. And the best part? It's completely free!
The open slopes of the cinder cone region marks the perfect point to jump off the trail and explore.
For snowshoers, the terrain is a little more challenging, stamina-wise.
Guided snowshoe tours are available starting in January, or once the snowpack reaches the optimal level.
Take caution, however. The weather can change rapidly here!
Nevertheless, when it comes to being immersed in nature and seeing Idaho's unique beauty up close and personal, there's nothing else like it!
Ready to make the trip?! Snowshoes are available to borrow at the Craters of the Moon Visitor Center, but skis are not provided. Be sure to check out the NPS Craters of the Moon winter map for detailed route options!
Where else but Idaho can you say that you went snowshoeing on the moon? Or that you trekked to the top of an old volcano? This is something that the whole family can enjoy, so get out there and make some memories! And be sure to share you photos with us on our Facebook page!
