On Oahu's northern shore, west of Haleiwa and more than 10 miles from the nearest restroom, is a picturesque beach nestled between the beautiful Waianae Mountain Range and the vast Pacific Ocean. Mokuleia, a beautiful white sand beach, is about as far as you can retreat from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu, and is a secluded spot where you can undoubtedly expect some much needed peace and quiet.
The beautiful, fine sand found on Mokuleia will invite you in, and thee breathtaking blue water will keep you coming back for more. The waves are almost always choppy here, but the waters are rich with sea life and you will often find green sea turtles basking on the sand during the summer months.
Stretching more than six miles from Waialua to Kaena Point, there is an official beach park with facilities and plenty of parking, as well as a few campsites.
Sure, there are some hardcore Lost fans who seek out the beach to see where the first season was shot, but rarely will you find more than a dozen people on the beach at any given time. I’ve actually been during the week and had the entire beach to myself to relax and enjoy some much needed sunshine.
Wait, were you interested in the beaches Hollywood fame? Fans of the television show "Lost" might recognize the beach as the site of the plane’s crash landing in the pilot episode, as well as much of the show’s first season. In fact, a stretch of road was covered in sand to extend the set, and was kept that way during the entirety of pilot filming.
Mokuleia is perfect for everything from sunbathing and sunset viewing to windsurfing, fishing, and snorkeling. Rumor has it that the section of beach to the right of the parking lot is clothing-optional, but I’ve never seen any signage that back up this claim - and there is a sign that prohibits nudity.
Beachgoers may also be witness to air traffic from the nearby Dillingham Airfield, a popular gliding and skydiving destination. If you’re looking to make the most out of a day on this remote coastline, check out the nearby Kealia Trail, one of my dog’s favorite hikes.
