This Wine-Themed Train in Georgia Will Give You the Ride of a Lifetime
This wine train in Georgia is such a fun excursion. What could be better than a scenic train ride paired with wine and cheese?
We're big fans of rail excursions here at Only In Your State, and, luckily, there are plenty of train rides in Georgia to enjoy. Whether you're looking for a fall foliage ride or you want to check out some of the state's most charming small towns, you'll find a rail adventure to suit your fancy in the Peach State. The ride we're featuring today is certain to draw quite a bit of interest: It's the SAM Shortline's Wine and Cheese Train. This fantastic train ride near Cordele, Georgia, is perfect for those seeking a fun and unique activity to enjoy in South Georgia. SAM Shortline schedules these rides throughout the year, with the next one scheduled for Saturday, October 4, 2025.
Cordele is a charming town with quite a bit of history. It was founded in 1888 as a small town at the junction of two major railroads. With such a prime location, it quickly grew, eventually becoming the self-proclaimed "Watermelon Capital of the World." Today, it's a small city with a population of around 10,000, but its historic district and abundance of local businesses make it feel smaller than it is.
Cordele is also home to Georgia Veterans State Park, located on the shores of Lake Blackshear. This is where you'll board the SAM Shortline Train for your wine and cheese excursion.
While many of the excursions offered by SAM Shortline are suitable for children, the wine and cheese train is not one of them. In fact, passengers must be 21 years or older to board this train.
The wine and cheese excursion is scheduled for 90 minutes, and yes, the historic train cars are air-conditioned. While on board, you'll get to sample four different wines from Paulk Vineyards. A cheese plate and charcuterie board, featuring meats and crackers, will be served alongside the wine.

Make sure to enjoy the views along the route—the scenery in this part of the state is not only beautiful, but it is also often overlooked. When the journey has ended, you'll be dropped off back at the Cordele train station, with a complimentary wine glass to take home as a souvenir.
The only thing I can think of that's better than an autumn train ride is a fall train excursion with wine and cheese. How about you? For more information about the SAM Shortline Wine and Cheese Train in Cordele, check out the SAM Shortline Railroad website or the SAM Shortline Facebook page.
