These are the Most Underrated Tourist Spots in Georgia, According to Local Redditors

Don’t miss these underrated tourist spots in Georgia. These are the low-key places that locals can't stop talking about.

Everyone knows that one of the best things about being in the travel space is hearing about other people's adventures. Locals have their favorite places, and we love that they’re always shedding light on some of the best underrated tourist spots in Georgia. So, whether you are looking for a new idea for an adventure or simply rethinking a place you overlooked, here are some of the best things to do in Georgia, straight from the locals who call the Peach State home. Chances are, you’ll discover some new places to add to your list, too.

1. Etowah Indian Mounds - Cartersville

I find the mysteries of the ancient people of America a fascinating subject that is still evolving and being discovered. One of the coolest facts about the Etowah Indian Mounds is that they are one of the most preserved Native American sites from the Mississippian age in the southeast region. So, walking in this park is like taking a step back in time to explore the early people who once called this region home. Explore the six earthen mounds, learn more in the visitor center, and have a picnic for a fun-filled day at the Etowah Indian Mounds.

2. Cloudland Canyon State Park - Raising Fawn

Cloudland Canyon State Park is an impressive spot in the northern mountains of Georgia. The large carved-out snaking canyon gives visitors breathtaking views, and hidden within its rocky walls are stunning waterfalls. Tackle the task of hiking down through the canyon or hugging the rim for the scenery; either way, this is one state park you don’t want to miss. My favorite trail here is the Cherokee Falls and Hemlock Falls Trail. If you can conquer the rocky terrain and metal steps, your reward of two beautiful waterfalls will be well worth it.

3. Doll Head Trail - Atlanta

The Doll Head Trail is a mixture of brilliant artistic expression and equally weird. Take a scenic walk, but along the way, witness various scenes with old retro toys in an odd fashion. Some of them are laugh-out-loud funny, like the doll head fixed to a duck, and then others are just a tad bit eerie. Whatever side of the coin you fall on, this is certainly a unique experience and an interesting way to get people outside. This trail is great any time of year, but it would be a fun spooktacular outing during Halloween.

4. Indian Springs State Park - Flovilla

Indian Springs State Park is a beautiful natural area south of Atlanta used as a retreat from busy city life. The name comes from the Native Americans, who used these springs to heal the sick. It is said that the water has healing properties, and you can bottle the water to try it yourself when you go. Spend the weekend camping, take a peaceful walk, or paddle along the water. Either way, Indian Springs is a great place to retreat to.

5. Georgia Aquarium - Atlanta

I find the peaceful rhythmic nature of aquatic creatures to be a soothing change of pace from the life we tend to live. Find yourself awe-inspired by the cadence of these creatures at the Georgia Aquarium. The Georgia Aquarium is the biggest aquarium in the country, which will just give you more to love as you watch playful penguins or ogle octopi. After visiting multiple times, I still can't get enough of it. It's especially great if you have little ones — you could easily spend an entire day here. If you plan on doing a few tourist attractions in Atlanta, then make sure to take advantage of the CityPass, which will allow you to get into the aquarium and many of the other city attractions.

6. Tank Town USA - Morganton

alt

Tank Town USA is pretty much exactly what you would expect — a place to drive a real tank and crush a car! What else would you expect? Fun wanton destruction sometimes is just too irresistible, and doing it in a tank, what could be better? A recent visitor had this to say, "This was an opportunity I could not pass up for my husband, who is just a little boy at heart. What little boy doesn’t want to drive a tank?" If you have ever wanted to live out your childhood dreams, then head to Morganton and feel the rumble of this powerful tool of war.

7. Savannah

Savannah is by no means a hidden gem, but instead a glowing example of what beauty awaits for those who want to explore Georgia. Undeniably filled to the brim with southern charm, this city is ripe for visitors. The historical buildings, the pristine parks, and the whimsical southern vibe make this a must-see place in the Peach State. It's one of those cities where you'll want to stay for more than one day to see all that it has to offer. If you are looking to make the most of your time in this southern city? Make sure to check out our coverage on what to do in Savannah in 24 hours.

8. Providence Canyon State Park - Lumpkin

Providence Canyon State Park is a wild anomaly for the state of Georgia. This little park looks like it was plucked right from Utah and placed in the South. Known as Georgia's Little Grand Canyon, this park is filled with awe-inspiring beauty unlike anywhere else in the state. This natural wonder is so pretty you won’t want to miss a single thing, so make sure to have your AllTrails app ready to follow along with the map.

9. Cumberland Island

Cumberland Island is a gorgeous national seashore filled with many more surprises than a nice beach. The island is only accessible by ferry and is inhabited by wild horses. Keep an eye out for the beautiful wild beasts, but make sure to also visit the Dungeness Ruins. Because of the remote location, you will find this seashore to be a peaceful escape, and you can even sleep overnight by pitching a tent at any of the five campgrounds.
