When looking for a great place to explore, the Peach State has plenty of options. With our variety of landscapes, you can have both a beach trip and a mountain getaway without ever leaving the state. Our big cities are great, with plenty of attractions, but all of the best small towns in Georgia are also worth a visit. Each one has its own charm and wonderful attractions. One of our favorites is Eatonton, Georgia. As the county seat of Putnam County, it's not so small that there's nothing to do, but it's also not so large as to be intimidating. It's the perfect small town! Here are a few of our favorite things to do in Eatonton, Georgia:
Downtown Eatonton offers free parking and there are a variety of shops and restaurants to check out. Carve out some time to stroll around and do a little window shopping before popping into a restaurant that catches your eye. El Cazador is one of our favorite restaurants in Eatonton--delicious Mexican food.
One fascinating spot in Eatonton that has plenty of historical value is the Rock Hawk Effigy Mound. The hawk-shaped mound was built 1,000 to 3,000 years ago by the Woodland Indian tribe.
Rock Hawk Effigy Mound isn't far from the beautiful Lake Oconee, a stunning lake that's quite popular for those seeking waterfront recreation. Technically, Lake Oconee is outside of Eatonon, but it’s worth your while to pop over—especially during the summer.
You'll find plenty of opportunities to hike all along the lake.
Bibliophiles know that we have plenty of great authors from Georgia. If you're interested in learning more about the literary history of the state, make a visit to the Georgia Writers Museum in Eatonton. There's lots of information here about some of the many famous writers from the Peach State!
That's not the only museum in Eatonton. You'll also find the Old School History Museum, located inside the city's historic schoolhouse, built in 1916. The museum documents the history of Putnam County.
You can also visit the Uncle Remus Museum. Joel Chandler Harris, the author of tales involving Brer Rabbit and his friends, was born in Eatonton. The museum covers the life of Harris and also has information about life in the antebellum South.
Eatonton also has local shops for shopaholics to enjoy. 44 Marketplace is a great little store carrying lots of home decor items, plus apparel and crafts.
