This Pioneer Settlement In Florida Will Remind You Of A Simpler Time

The Panhandle Pioneer Settlement in Blountstown, Florida, offers a glimpse into the lives of Florida's early pioneers with restored historic buildings and educational exhibits.

A lot of people don't realize that cowboys and pioneers did not just exist in the Old West. Florida did indeed have its own pioneers and cowboys, often called "crackers" because they used whips rather than lassos to herd cattle. To learn more about life for Florida's early pioneers, the best place to visit is The Panhandle Pioneer Settlement in Blountstown. This 40-acre park in Northwest Florida has 18 beautifully restored historic buildings dating from the 1820s to the 1940s.

The living museum exhibits at the settlement teach classes in blacksmithing, honey and maple syrup making, and all kinds of pioneer crafts. The hope is that folks can learn a thing or two while escaping the modern world on a trip back in time, and in turn, some of those pioneer values can be preserved in their daily lives.

The Panhandle Pioneer Settlement is open for tours Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. (Central Time), with the last tour starting at 1 p.m. Visit the settlement's website for more information.

For an extra-special trip, visit on the day of the upcoming Annual Peanut Boil, Saturday, September 24th, 5:30pm - 8:30pm (Central Time), one of many events held throughout the year. Come enjoy live music and free peanuts for this special evening on the settlement. 17869 NW Pioneer Settlement Road, Blountstown, FL, 32424
