Locals Are Obsessed With This Iconic Roadside Spot in Florida

Take your love of Florida to new heights when you climb 200+ stairs to one of the best views in Florida.

Florida is a state that's tailor-made for a classic road trip. Palm-tree-lined roads, beautiful coastal views, long stretches of highway, and more make us want to roll down our windows and turn up the music. And that's not even taking into consideration all the amazing Florida roadside attractions. Whether you're in the mood for a classic burger joint or a quirky roadside stop, the Sunshine State will deliver.

Today, we're focused on one attraction in particular that's not only popular among tourists; it's a local favorite. Come with us as we climb up 200 steps of the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse and Museum to enjoy one of the region's most mesmerizing views.

I've always been drawn to lighthouses. Not only are they picture-perfect coastal landmarks, but they also serve important navigational purposes, serving as a beacon of safety. Florida's tallest lighthouse is also, in my opinion, its most fascinating.

Since 1887, the Ponce de Leon Inlet Light has towered an impressive 175 feet above Florida's coast. After the original structure, built in 1835, was destroyed in the Second Seminole War, there were many shipwrecks along what was then known as the Mosquito Coast. The construction of the current lighthouse ensured that its light could be seen for 17 nautical miles. Today, thanks to the Lighthouse Preservation Association, the lighthouse continues to operate, and it holds the rare distinction of being a National Historic Landmark.

It's one thing to see the towering lighthouse from the outside; it's another thing entirely to climb to the top and marvel at the view. Getting there isn't easy; you'll need to climb 203 steps to get to the top. Visitors recommend wearing closed-toed shoes for the staircase and bringing a layer if you visit on a chilly day. You'll really feel the wind at the top of the lighthouse! But, by all accounts, your effort will be well rewarded with the view from the top. Pictures hardly do justice to the panoramic views you'll enjoy.

Aside from the view, however, there's another reason why locals are so intrigued by this particular landmark: its lens. The Ponce de Leon Inlet Light is famous for its use of the Fresnel lens, a fascinating kind of lens that relies on hundreds of pieces of individually cut glass and prisms that collect the light in such a way as to reflect it in one concentrated beam of light that can be seen for miles. When you visit the lighthouse, be sure to spend some time at the museum, which has a dedicated Lens Exhibit Building for those interested in this particular history.

After spending time at the lighthouse and surrounding structures, spend some time at the Lighthouse Point Park. Elevated boardwalk trails allow visitors to experience this breathtaking barrier island, and you'll love the unique glimpses of the boardwalk you'll see along the way. The most popular hike in the park is the Ponce Preserve Trail, an easy one-mile trail.

If you haven't had the chance to visit this lighthouse yet, we think you'll love it! And if you're looking for other places to stop on your road trip, check out our itinerary planner for nearby recommendations!
