Love the Florida Keys? Visit This Island Next

Escape the Crowds and venture to Cayo Costa State Park, an underrated Florida Island to rival the Keys.

The Florida Keys have always been a dream destination for so many travelers looking for sun-soaked beaches, turquoise waters, and a true Jimmy Buffett island vibe. But with growing popularity comes crowds, high prices, and sometimes a bit too much hustle for those seeking true relaxation.

If you’re like me, forever looking for a slice of paradise that captures the beauty of the Keys without the congestion, Cayo Costa State Park is your perfect alternative. Right on Florida's Gulf Coast, just west of Fort Myers, let's take a look at why this off-the-radar island is the perfect dupe for the Florida Keys.

Cayo Costa State Park is one of the state’s last untouched island escapes, only accessible by boat or kayak. Unlike Key West or Key Largo, where development is widespread, Cayo Costa remains blissfully wild, with nine miles of beaches, abundant maritime forests, and beautifully blue waters teeming with marine life.

So why choose Cayo Costa over the Keys? A few reasons come to mind. For starters, you'll have crowd-free seclusion. I've visited the Keys numerous times, and while I absolutely adore the area, it can get crowded. While Key West’s Duval Street bustles with tourists and partygoers, Cayo Costa offers nothing but the sound of waves and the rustling of palm trees. With limited visitor capacity and no cars, the island provides a true off-the-grid experience.

Secondly, you'll find a much more affordable escape. A trip to the Keys can get pricey, with high-end resorts and tourist-driven prices. Meanwhile, a visit to Cayo Costa is as simple as booking a ferry ride and either camping under the stars or staying in one of the rustic cabins provided by the state park.

Unlike the more developed areas of the Keys, Cayo Costa is a haven for wildlife lovers. Here, you can spot manatees in the shallows, sea turtles nesting on the beach, and ospreys soaring overhead — all without the distraction of crowds or boat traffic.

Finally, Cayo Costa offers untouched natural beauty like no other. The Florida Keys are famous for their coral reefs, but their sandy beaches are limited. In fact, I was so surprised during my first trip to Key West to find just one beach, and it was tiny. Cayo Costa, on the other hand, boasts miles of unspoiled shoreline perfect for beachcombing, shelling, and watching dolphins play just offshore.

Speaking of shelling, people visit Cayo Costa specifically to find some incredible shells. The island’s beaches are covered in stunning seashells, often outshining even the famous Sanibel Island nearby.

If you love nightlife, high-end resorts, and easy access to restaurants and bars, the Keys may be a better fit. But if you dream of deserted beaches, breathtaking natural scenery, and a peaceful retreat into nature, Cayo Costa is the perfect dupe for a Florida Keys escape — without the crowds, costs, or commercialization.

Would you trade the bustling streets of Key West for the wild beauty of Cayo Costa? If you do, we think you'll love it! Share this article with someone you want to visit Cayo Costa with.
