The Epic Fire Lookout In Connecticut That Has Mesmerizing Views
Mount Tom Tower in Connecticut offers an easy hike with incredible 360-degree views and historical significance.
Connecticut was once home to over forty fire lookout towers, though less than ten remain standing today. The most famous of the survivors is the Mount Tom Tower, which has stood for nearly one hundred years. While forest fires aren't nearly as common here as in other states, having a maintained fire tower was one of the requirements when the land for Mount Tom State Park was gifted to the state. Originally made of wood, this particular tower was only a backup, but was later rebuilt in stone and upgraded to include a telephone line. Check it out!
The trail to Mount Tom's summit is less than a mile long and is considered a pretty easy hike.
Mount Tom Tower stands thirty-four feet tall and fifteen feet wide. Its stone comes from the mountain itself and it remains in very good condition, despite the years.
You'll have to climb three flights of stairs to get to the tower's observation deck but it's totally worth it. The 360 degree views are absolutely incredible.
You can see Massachusetts' Mt. Everett, New York's Catskills and the Long Island Sound from up here. In the 1900s, a full time scout would have walked the deck looking for fires out in the distance, but now it's just for your enjoyment.
There aren't many places like this left, so you'll definitely want to visit!
Mount Tom Tower is located in Mount Tom State Park, Route 202, Litchfield, CT 06759. When you see the lake, just look for park signs. The trail is located across the park road.
