26 Exciting Things to Do in Northern California in 2026 (You’ll Want to Save This List)
Experience NorCal like you never have before.

Studies show that more than 90 percent of New Year's resolutions are abandoned within a few months. But if your resolutions involve visiting bucket list travel destinations, achieving your 2026 goals might feel like a piece of cake—especially if you live in beautiful Northern California.
I hope to turn this year into an epic adventure filled with sights, sounds, and lots of tasty food (and hope you do, too!). So, to set us up for success, here's a list of what I'd like to do in Northern California in 2026. Hopefully, it will inspire us to make 2026 the best year yet.
1. Stay at "The Ranch House" Near Pebble Beach - Sea Ranch
Picture this: You, curled up with a book, nursing a hot cup of tea by this stylish fireplace. Designed by famed architect Don Jacobs, "The Ranch House" is an idyllic spring or autumn retreat—a place to refresh and reflect as the seasons make their own transition into fall or winter.
2. Kayaking Tours - Lake Tahoe
Lake Tahoe offers countless places to put in your kayak and explore one of the most beautiful lakes in the U.S. Bring your own kayak to the lake or rent one from a local company. There are even kayak tours you can sign up for if you want to explore with an expert. Make sure you pay attention to the weather before your adventure, however. The weather in this area of the state can change quickly.
3. Mushroom Foraging - Santa Cruz
Mushrooms are so magical. Not only are they one of the Earth's oldest living things (scientists recently discovered a one billion-year-old fungus in Canada), but one variety—aptly called the "Humongous Fungus"—is considered the planet's largest organism! Plus, they're delicious. This three-hour tour promises to teach newcomers like me the ins and outs of mushroom foraging, a hobby I've wanted to explore for a long time.
4. Restaurant Tour - Northern California
Not only does Northern California boast more Michelin Star-awarded restaurants than Southern California, but it also has more Michelin Star-awarded restaurants than any other region in the country. From Yountville's The French Laundry to Woodside's The Village Pub, these eateries have been at the forefront of world cuisine for several decades and counting. Though I could pick one, I'd be happy—and incredibly lucky—to eat at any of these revered points of pilgrimage.
5. BottleRock Napa Valley Festival - Napa
With their soaring ticket prices and sardine-can crowds, I've grown wary of the big-name music festivals. I far prefer the homegrown options, like Napa's effervescent BottleRock. A three-day bacchanal of wine, food, brew, and live music? Count me in! You'll want to make your reservations for this getaway early—now is the perfect time. It'll take place May 22 through 24, 2026.
6. General Sherman Redwood Tree - Three Rivers

Though rumors of an even larger redwood exist, venerable General Sherman is the closest most of us will ever stand to a true giant. Visiting this famous tree, where he's stood, towering over his brothers for the last 2,700 years, is a must-do family adventure. Just remember your America the Beautiful park passes since it's located in Kings Canyon National Park.
7. Urban Hiking - Northern California

Walking is one of the most underrated forms of exercise—and all you need is a good pair of shoes. Urban hiking, in particular, is an excellent way to explore your local area, tuning you in to the many parks, shops, and restaurants right beyond your doorstep.
8. The Lost Whale Inn - Trinidad
A stone's throw from Sue-Meg State Park, Agate Beach, and the charming oceanfront town of Trinidad, The Lost Whale is a swoon-worthy bed and breakfast ideal for solo sojourns or romantic rendezvous. Book your stay and fall in love with this picturesque slice of the Northern Californian coast.
9. Cafe Aquatica - Jenner
When I first saw photos of this waterfront eatery, I was smitten. Cafe Aquatica checks all the boxes of lifelong love, boasting panoramic views of the Russian River, crave-worthy food, and live music every weekend. Not to mention—as a thoroughly snobby PNW-er—its coffee really is all it's cracked up to be.
10. Snowshoeing - Tahoe City

Northern California's iconic parks and breathtaking beauty attract countless outdoor enthusiasts—even in winter. One of the best ways to experience winter around here? Snowshoeing in Tahoe City, of course. Unlike skiing or snowboarding, it's easy to learn the basics in one class, and many outfitters offer equipment rentals.
11. Santa Cruz Mountain Mushroom Festival - Felton

If you're a mushroom lover like me (as previously mentioned), you have to hit up the Santa Cruz Mountain Mushroom Festival in Felton. It's a mushroom-tasting, wine-tasting, beer-tasting, live-music-listening, train-riding, art-galley-offering extravaganza. I'm sitting down and planning my adventure already—stay tuned for the May 2026 festival dates.
12. Bumpass Hell Trail - Mineral
Home to venting fumaroles, belching sulfur, and simmering mud pools, Bumpass Hell is easily one of Northern California's most idiosyncratic habitats. In a region of sublime beauty, it's a real treat to discover a place as bizarre and otherworldly as this Lassen Volcanic National Park spot. Just keep in mind the trail is closed during winter and opens once the snow has melted.
12. "Lord of the Rings" Live Orchestra - San Francisco
Hosted in the beautiful Davies Symphony Hall, enjoy the sights and sounds of "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" film with live orchestra on April 30, May 1, and May 2, 2026. Watch the movie on screen as the San Francisco Symphony plays the iconic score live. Consider it a perfect outing for film buffs and music lovers alike.
14. Surfing Lessons - Stinson Beach

Years ago, when I lived in Cape Town, South Africa, I took a surfing class at Muizenberg Beach, known for its kid-friendly waves and sleepy tides. I was the only participant who couldn't manage to stand up on their board. Not even once. This year, I plan to try surfing once again. With the help of one-off classes and patient instructors at Stinson Beach, I might just succeed at "hanging ten" in 2026.
15. Beekeeping - San Jose

Bees play a crucial role in our environment and agricultural systems. They also provide us with honey—my pick for the best sweetener of tea. Learn about these adorable and hardworking insects in a class led by experienced apiarists at Valley Verde's Beekeeping Program. San Jose has plenty of other beekeeping opportunities, too.
16. Marufuku Ramen Bar - San Francisco
Widely considered the best ramen joint in the city, Marufuku has been outshining diners with less ramen fare since 2017. This year, I'll join the fanfare and travel to Japantown in San Francisco for my own oishī bowl. It's truly one of the best restaurants in Northern California.
17. The Kinetic Grand Championship - Eureka
Every year since 1969, the odd, passionate, and supremely ingenious participants of Eureka's Kinetic Race gather to test their fabrication chops. Known locally as "Kinetinauts," they race moving sculptures for three days in what's been called the "Triathlon of the Art World," competing for various accolades, including the coveted crown of "Rutabaga Queen." This is another event I'm planning for on May 23 through 25, 2026—I don't want any excuses to miss this event in the new year.
18. Architecture Exploring - Sutter Creek

Tucked in the heart of Northern California's Gold Country, Sutter Creek is an idyllic mix of natural beauty, history, and small-town charm. Arrive for the 19th-century architecture, diverting shops, and bucolic setting, and then stay for the award-winning wineries. I can't think of a better escape.
19. Mill Valley Film Festival - San Rafael
The Mill Valley Film Festival is a must-attend for budding cinephiles and casual moviegoers, showcasing a masterfully curated selection of independent and international films. When they release their dates for 2026, I'll be the first to purchase tickets.
20. Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve - Lee Vining

Marvel at nature's quirky side at Mono Lake Tufa State National Reserve, where bizarre tufa towers rise from a glittering, 65-square-mile lake. At over one million years old, this body of water is one of North America's most ancient lake, and it's also absolutely worth a visit.
21. Perseid Meteor Shower - Northern California

Every summer, peaking in mid-August, the Perseid meteor shower illuminates the night sky. For the best visibility, leave the city lights behind and head to spots like Mount Shasta, Lassen Volcanic National Park, or even empty pockets of the Sierra Nevadas. Bring a blanket, some binoculars, and a thermos of cocoa for an unforgettable night beneath the stars.
22. Winchester Mystery House - San Jose
Need something spooky to keep this fall exciting? Do as I do and head to the Winchester Mystery House, a maze of secret doors, twisting passages, and baffling local history! Go on a mansion tour, visit Sarah's Garden, hit up the souvenir shop, or join one of the pop-up events. It's one of San Jose's historic gems.
23. Hayes Valley Annual Halloween Parade - San Francisco
As the proud owner of four dogs under five pounds, I've sat on the sidelines of the Hayes Valley Halloween Parade in San Francisco for far too long. Next Halloween, you'll see one of my pooches on the winner's podium, guaranteed! Better yet, I'll match our costumes and get plenty of photos.
24. Rug Tufting Workshop - San Jose
It can be initmidating to get into a new hobby, especially as you get older. But there's something to be said about being a beginner at something—it's a gratifying and humbling experience. One hobby that'll spark your crafty side in 2026? This rug tufting workshop in San Jose hosted by Airbnb experiences. Prepare to make some seriously cool things.
25. Holbrooke Hotel - Grass Valley
Steeped in a rich history dating back to the Gold Rush, The Holbrooke Hotel is a dream destination for anyone who loves both vintage atmosphere and modern luxury. Every inch of this remarkable building feels layered with story, from its gorgeous antique details to its now-iconic facade. Stroll to local shops, art galleries, and restaurants, or sink into your soft bed for a late-afternoon snooze.
26. California State Railroad Museum - Sacramento
In the search for the most unique attractions in Northern California, I've stumbled across the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento. This historic museum is home to 225,000 square-feet of exhibits and restored railroad cars and locomotives. It's a great place to bring the kids and learn about the Golden State's history.
